Let me run through my thought pattern...
I wasn't very thrilled with the overall look of the "wheel" section of the original Neo-Geo theme I built. There were some logos that had similar colors to the background and it looked pretty ... meh ... at best IMHO... so I decided to modify the skin a bit... add a burned out section where the games list is so I had an excuse to have a black background... and move forward. I then read a post here about a method to create somewhat of a "border" by off setting 4 blacked out copies of the images and offsetting them in the 4 corners. The overall effect was quite effective. Effective enough that I wanted to use it with the original skin. As a bonus, the method makes text MUCH more readable on background images and as such I was able to setup a "list" versus "logo" option. Finally, because I did like the work I did on the "burned" skin, I decided to add it as well... why not. Keep in mind the border effect will be moot with this skin... but you can still use logo or text.
