[video] animated marquee - DMD pinball display style
« on: December 15, 2015, 12:28:27 PM »
Maybe I'm too picky - but scrapped marquees are not that great (quality wise, scrapping mechanism on its own - is a godsend!).
Faded colours, bad scans, etc. So I end up fixing almost every marquee that I wanted to use - or even making them from scratch.

So it got me thinking that I might be better spending that time actually "creating" something instead of "re-creating".

SMALL GIF here:

you can see the animated marquee in working theme:

This looks amazing, especially on your layout! You have to create all of them from scratch, though? Might it be possible to apply a somewhat similar effect on existing marquees with a shader using a flyer/snap/marquee combo? Just a thought :)

Actually... I came up to this when I was thinking about making an "automatic marquee builder" for my NEVATO theme - using wheel and a fanart. But I've got carried away :)

But here's what you can do without breaking a sweat:

- wheel art with bloom shader on 45% opacity
- wheel art with 45% opacity
- "led array" png transparent mask
- fanart or flyer fit-to-width

---

This is something that even I can code - with my excellent code-copy-and-paste skills.

The animation is made with video post production software.
But if you are willing to handle the REAL coding - it can be push much further than my example above. I'm sure that it can be more-or-less recreated with coding - it's just a bunch of pretty simple transitions like scale, move, fade in, fade out - just stacked together nicely.

Verion the animated marquee looks great!  I'd happily change the scraper if you come up with some more of those :)

The problem is that "some" is not enough. It has to be all-or-nothing.

There is about 4 thousand mame parent roms - let's say people are really using 1000 of them. That is a behemot task - like 2 months of work full time. And that's only mame. This simply can't be done in spare time.

i think you would want to either go the route I mentioned, or if it's possible to do "batch" conversion with the effects you have.. could you create a script to the flyer/snap, wheel art folders and apply semi-random effects to them? Certainly some might need to be re-done if it doesn't come out right, but that could take care of a majority. I'm not the one with After Effects experience or whatever you are using though ;)

I'm not givig up - maybe I can come up with something.
Maybe not fully automatic - but more streamlined.
It's not that there is a "effect" applied - it is more like "building" process.

And there is one step that can't be done automatically. Almost every logo has to be redrawn to "extract" a basic filled shape - mainly to strip it out of any 3D effect or outline (see attachment). It can be done very coarsely and quickly - but can't be done automatically.

Old topic but curious what tools were used to create the images/videos. Thanks!

images - Photoshop
animation - ScreenFlow (mac only)

But animation can be done in any vid post production software - it's just a bunch of pretty simple transitions like scale, move, fade in, fade out - just stacked together nicely.
