Awesome work Dal1980. Love the theme keep it up! and I want more systems too..but take your time...but i want them ALL by tomorrow!  :P ;)

I'll watch with anticipation take your time no rush.

About time you code monkeys got it together! I had to ration the banana intake for them to encourage them to work faster  ;)

(No really guys that is awesome. LOVE my AM :D Thanks for all your hard work!  8) )

P.S. Always remember people E=MC2

That is More Code=Errors   Have to be patient and give them time..never want to rush perfection right?  ;)

I have to +1 hermine here that is usually the problem in this case 99.6% of the time..even I forget from time to time.

Yes I find I have the same problem as well. it may have something to do with the software lists? Don't quote me on that.
But if I have an older chd for KI works fine from the command line..from the gui I get the error...soooo..thus my guess...

Never tried updating the chd and then long as it was not broken i didn't fix it  ;)

« on: July 06, 2018, 09:44:20 AM »
The is under going some changes I think.  Stelh's scrapper will not work nor will Emulationstation. So it is not just Attractmode that has the problem. I ran into this a few weeks back..the the games DB it doesn't. Like I said think they are undergoing changes to the website. Gonna have to wait this one out folks.

Emulators / Re: Best Compression for Specific Emulators

I was expecting some ideas not a tutorial!  :o

Thank you!  ;D

Sadly I found msu hacks for the snes couple of days I effectively turned a few snes games into ISOs lol (2.5mb to 456mb!)
But they sound AWESOME! :D

Yeah don't get me wrong I would love for the pi to run everything..but it's not made for that..maybe in ten years? I am just trying to put as much as I can on the pi and get that off my PC I don't have a high end pc and I have a small HDD..that and well everybody wants it plugged into the TV... we'll see what the PI4 has.. I am hoping the new Raspberry PI zero (0.2?) will be built off the new pi 4 specs..yeah in two years maybe..but then I can get a stack of them

I have a USB drive I run everything from works great for me..just hate having to "haul an extra piece around"..that and they like to put it on top of the spare CRT I have. I saw a SNES build where they built the HHD into a snes cart and "stuck it in the machine" might do that.

I also want to point out that for 3DO using the phoenix emulator you can use it to compress the roms down (binar it's called). It is actually just a little bit smaller than a chd of the same rom. they are smaller than a bin or iso but chd is still smaller overall..but this emulator can't read/understand a chd

Awesome work thank you for that progets!

You are coming from a PC side looks like..

What about a Raspberry PI?...why do you need space..well because your SD is small on a raspberry pi! ;P

Okay so here are my findings:

PSX (Psx-ReARMed)
     Crash Team Racing
ISO 605.7 MB difference of 0
IMG 605.7 MB difference of 0
BIN 605.7 MB difference of 0
CSO 421.9 MB difference of 183.8 MB
PBP 372.9 MB difference of 232.8 MB  <--- WINNER!
CHD 317.9 MB difference of 287.8 MB*

*Psx-Rearmed can not use a chd format but that is a 55 MB difference...add it across 10 games or so.well you get my point..

Mega Drive/Genesis:
         3 Ninjas Kick Back
BIN 2.1 MB  difference of 0
ZIP 917.8 KB  difference of 1232.6 KB (1.2 MB)
7z 741.9 KB  difference of 1408.5 KB (1.3 MB)

So compression is a GOOD thing for the PI on space...but you trade that for speed (thus slower load times), as stated by progets in the original post. With smaller ROMs (Atari, NES..ect. Might not make a big noticeable difference compressed on loading. And I am not even sure how much space you would get all together..but with a small SD card..yes even a 128GB..well space is important! I don't have $1,000 for a TB SD Card..I can't wait until I can afford one though..but hard drives are cheap :P

Question... know any good programs that will mass compress roms..or any ideas how to do it?

Emulators / Re: Mednafen emulator

mednfen is VERY picky about the bios..I had this trouble also..and still do to a degree. you MUST have the right name and the right hash and file size for it to work correctly.

some pages that may help you:

some games i can get to work..others I can for which ones exactly i couldn't tell you.

General / Re: Attract mode booting to blank screen
« on: February 02, 2018, 06:19:13 PM »
I can not load my image at the moment.. however if you need to get a terminal you can press Ctrl+Alt+F2 (or F3 or F4 of F5) that gets you to where you have control.

as for a boot interrupt you can hold shift key in noobs...however I think the build is on raspian...

so i take it attract mode was set up and still is you just want to go to ES again? have you tried the tab get to get to the setup menu of attractmode and then rebuilt the attract mode "system menu"? The only other thing I can suggest is that you SSH into your pi and change the user start files NOT the boot files) not sure how to do it exactly I can look it up if need be...

For now let it boot totally..then drop to a terminal also note that the F4 key might drop you to a terminal as well) and kill AM) enable SSH:

Code: [Select]
sudo raspi-config (press enter)
under interfacing options go down and enable SSH...
then type

Code: [Select]
ifconfig (press emter)
take note of your ip address (
grab filezilla and then log in with it...that way you can get access to the files you need to change

as for EXACTLY how to do it..I'll have to get back you..unless someone beats me to it....

might be the "hard way" but better than nothing..

Well all I can suggest is put linux on the machine. If you are trying to install groovy arcade then it is linux. Arch I believe.

If you are willing to wipe the drive and install just a linux desktop and then attract mode go for it.

Use Lbuntu. But you will have to compile attract mode yourself..I think..the repo maybe updated..and if it is... easy..

However if your hard drive is not available to groovy arcade then you may have the same problem with linux. Try another distro..

is windows all you can install on the machine?

Since you are on a PC you can use Steven Selph's scraper. The videos WILL work on a PC however you will have to compile it but it will work.

You just have to batch encode them with handbrake you can do that from the command line I did a "full" batch of videos for arcade for my pi. (The pi doesn't like 60fps @ 640x480...heh.) The scraper works but it brings down unusable videos. Just let in run over night or while at work. Or create a batch file and run that.

Here i did it for you This will convert them with the x264 encoder to a size of 640x480 @60fps with a volume drop of -20:
1. Copy it to the folder you have your videos located
2. Open it in notepad
3. change the output paths using search and replace
4. change -o path/ to the output folder you want (e.x. create an output folder inside the folder your videos are in)
     A. open the empty folder you want your videos to go in and then copy the path from the bar at the top and paste it into the "replace with" bar.
5. So now you have for example -o /arcade/videos/output/ (yes you need the -o and space! and the ending /) in the replace with box.
6. then click replace all
7. then save the file
8. now double click the bat file or

run from the command line
      a. Press windows key+r
      b. Type cd then the path to your videos folder (the folder you dropped the bat file into copy it from file explorer and then into the command window if you want) ex.
Code: [Select]
cd games/arcade/videos
then type
Code: [Select]
clihandbrake.bat press enter

if it throws any errors let me know (copy and paste it here (and note double clicking it will not produce and output if there are errors )) you can stop it by pressing ctrl+x
note not all videos will be found to convert..this is normal.

[Took me longer to type all that then it did to make the batch file!   :o ]

General / Re: External Disk Attract and Enulationstation
« on: January 17, 2018, 10:11:49 AM »

I have, for example, Atari2600 roms. For the No Attract Mode I have to copy in the folder retropie-mount/roms/atari2600 and the system recognize the roms.
For the Attract mode I have to copy in piroms/atari2600 and the system recognize the roms.

Ok so I am guessing here that no Attract Mode means EmulationStation. Am I correct? If so please just say Emulationstation

Second let me made sure I understand:
1. You want all the games and media on the external HDD with just the operating system. configuration files on the SD card.correct?
Easy to do. (I assumed that you already have done it.) If everything is on your HDD..

I do not know why you have two folders of roms for the same system. That is not needed. If the path  retropie-mount/roms/atari2600 works with emulationstation then all you have to do is set up Attract mode to use that path as well.

1. On the main Attract mode screen Press the Esc button
2. Go to emulators
3. Go to Atari2600
4. Got to roms path
5. Enter  retropie-mount/roms/atari2600 there
6. Press Escape
7. Now go down to generate list (if is asks to overwrite your list say yes)
8. When done press Esc twice (you should be back on the main screen)
9. look at your atari 2600 list

This can be done with every path (for videos, marquees, etc.) Just point it to the path that is shown. Note that is you are looking at the path over ssh or sfpt (a network) you will NOT get the right folder. You need the local path on the pi.

I find your path strange though normally the path starts with /media/usb0/ for an external device on the pi. That is where you should be looking for your hdd...from beyond that you can have whatever path you want.

Remember when using a HDD you MUST have it powered separately the pi can NOT power the pi by itself it was never designed to do that!

read through these write-ups here an see if they can help you as well:...

if you can get attract mode and emulationstation to read your roms  and make a list from the same folder (or different if you want) tell me. THEN we will work on making work and switch between them.

Thanks a lot...  :D

I want to have shared roms in EmulationStation and Attract Mode.

In the External drive EmulationStation want a retropie-mount folder and attract mode want a piroms.

Can I switch one of the two??

I'm sorry I don't fully understand what you are wanting here. You don't have to have anything on the sd card except the operating can store everything on the hdd as far as attract mode or emulationstation is concerned. However in order for us to get it working I need to know what you are storing on each device.

to answer your first statement:
Your roms can be shared between emulation station and attract mode...however again you have to set the path to the roms in attract mode for them to be found. if they are on the external drive then you need to put that path into the config files for attract mode. If they are on an sd card (assuming you are using a raspberry pi) then you make sure the path is set to the correct path on the pi.

That being need to tell me what you are using to run retopie on.
       1. Are you running retro pie on a PC or a raspberry pi?
        2. If it is on a PC what operating system are you running?
        3. You need to tell me where your roms and artwork are being stored
        4. What is on the HDD and what is on the sd card (if you are using a pi)

If you can not tell me that then I can not help you. It is not that i do not want is that i can not because I do not have information to start problem solving with.
