AM OSX users: What emulators are you using?
« on: January 03, 2017, 02:54:08 PM »
I'm tired of playing N64 on my Raspberry Pi- too choppy. I want to move over to my better hardware which is a Mac Mini but I've never done emulation on OS X. It looks lie there are a lot of abandoned platforms and its hard to tell whats current. Those of you running this on a Mac, what have you found to be the best emulators? I'm mostly going to run NES, SNES, N64, MAME, & Sega Genesis.

Thanks!

Try those consoles in mame first. MESS has been merged with MAME. If your not happy, then seek another emulator. The only console I'm unsure if mame will emulate well is n64, only because I could care less about emulating those newer consoles. Try it.

I did a fast try with mupen64 plus, and it seems to work nicely:
https://github.com/mupen64plus/mupen64plus-core/releases/tag/2.5
I just created the following config in Attract Mode/Emulators/Create New Emulator:

# Generated by Attract-Mode v2.2.0-3
#
executable           $HOME/Documents/Attract Mode Data/mupen64plus/run_rice.sh
args                 "[romfilename]"
rompath              $HOME/Documents/RetroArch/Hotstuff/N64/
romext               .n64
artwork    flyer
artwork    marquee
artwork    snap
artwork    wheel
Next would now be to finetune the Mupen64plus config file in [$HOME]/.config after first start of the emulator (joypad, resolution, etc.).
Hope this helps!

PS EDIT: After some testing, I would recommend you to go for Retroarch in the case of N64 emulation, alternatively OpenEmu, they both provide you with a far less painful configuration experience.

Mame. Don't need anything else.
