I have ffmepg installed and overclocked my pi.  If I run attract-man theme it seems to work just fine.  However, when I switch to a retro pie theme or hyperspin theme, the entire pi runs super slow.  I have mpg4 videos and art from emumovies.  Do I need to switch to a PC for better performance or should the Pi be just fine?

I use the pleasure dome torrent, updated with each mame release.  I am confused on separation of projects by same author.

Regardless, layout code has a huge impact on performance. With the raspberry pi lacking performance compared to current PC’s, one must have performance in mind when programming. I had no issues with attract-man or my picknmix on the raspberry pi 3b+ with videos previously mentioned. I did not try any others.

Because video snaps worked well for you with attract-man, I am guessing the themes you are trying to use is coded without performance in mind. Excessive use of shaders and surfaces will result in video issues. Animation timing can create a jagged experience, hence why I worked with oomek to create delta class and eliminate this. You mention „retropie theme“ and „hyperspin theme“. You need to be more specific.
