General / Re: MAME game runs worse through Attract Mode

Well, after a bit more fiddling, it's not Attract Mode causing the problem - it's running Run And Gun 2 from the command line that causes it. Off to mamedev.org!

General / MAME game runs worse through Attract Mode
« on: July 28, 2016, 09:43:22 PM »
Pulling my hair out here as I have no idea what's wrong or how to fix it.

First, my setup:
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T (Stock)
AMD Radeon 6870
8GB RAM
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
Mame0173b_64bit (HiScore, No-Nag, DirectInput)

My problem:
Launching Run And Gun 2 directly from within MAME with HLSL enabled runs beautifully - zero frameskip nets me a rock-solid 100% speed with vsync enabled, and in fast-forward mode it hits like 160% during gameplay.
Launching Run And Gun 2 from within Attract Mode using the same exact version of Mame and settings nets me a garbage 68% speed during gameplay.

Anyone have any idea what the hell is going on and how to fix it? I need to check some of the other games that have been giving me slowdown problems with Attract Mode and test launching them straight from Mame, but this has me concerned - could Attract Mode really be using up that much horsepower while running in the background?

Thanks in advance peeps.

Scripting / Any way to have text auto-resize?
« on: July 01, 2016, 02:49:15 PM »
Hey guys, I'm trying to modify the Game Station HD theme to suit my needs, and the one thing that's driving me a bit crazy is the seeming inability to have text auto-resize to fit a designated area.

I'd like to have the main title of the game shrink down when it's really long, and get bigger when it's super short so that you can actually read the entire title.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Turtles In Time" needs to shrink down in font size to match the same horizontal space as "Tetris".

Anyone have any ideas?

mame .143
Built-in graphics on Asus TS10
res i think is 1920x1080

Thanks. Maybe it's some weird problem with the fact that I'm using HLSL on mame .174 - using the Direct3D aspect of it might be screwing things up. I'm at a complete loss, especially since this morning everything is working fine again and I did absolutely nothing to change it.

I am not having this issue.

What version of MAME, brand of graphics card, and what screen resolution are you using?

Thanks! Going nuts here.

Thanks, found the setting, but it doesn't help either way.

I can't be the only person running Windows 10 with attract mode, can I? Am I the only person with this problem? I've shut down literally every non-essential task in the task manager and it doesn't seem to make any difference  :(

I don't see a hide/show console option. Can you point me in the right direction for that?

Well, the problem is back and I've done nothing different. No idea what's going on, but it's driving me absolutely crazy. Does anyone else have any suggestions as to how to solve this? This is the last thing I need to fix before my cabinet is complete  :(

Try running AM in compatibility mode = windows 7.

Preliminary tests are showing that this fixed it. Thanks so much for the suggestion - no idea why I didn't try that. If the problem comes back, I'll try the hide console option next, but fingers are crossed that the issue is fixed.

Thanks!

General / Windows 10 not giving focus back to Attract Mode
« on: June 21, 2016, 09:43:45 PM »
So I'm most of the way through my first cabinet build and everything has been going swimmingly up until just a few days ago.

I have no idea what changed or what windows update might have installed, but now most of the time when exiting a game in MAME, Attract Mode won't regain focus and I either have to click on it with the mouse or ALT-TAB over to it.

I'm running Windows 10 and here are the things I've tried:

Disable windows notifications
Disable everything in the task manager startup
Try both full screen and fill screen modes of Attract Mode
Try both full screen and fill screen modes of MAME

I'm going completely nuts here and would rather not do a fresh install of Windows 7, as I also plan on playing PC games on this machine and support for 7 is certainly waning.

Can anyone suggest anything else I can try?

Thanks!
