General / A bootable Linux ISO/USB that auto-loads from a 2nd USB
« on: September 18, 2018, 07:38:56 PM »
Hi all.

This is something I had been working on for a long while, and only just got around to completing - a USB bootable Linux install that boots directly to Attract Mode, and loads/saves configs, roms, art etc from a second USB drive.

The short of it is:
- write iso to USB drive,
- format another USB drive with a partition named 'arcade_usb'
- copy your complete setup to the above drive partition (see example)
    - Attract Mode setup is expected to be in the attractmode directory
- insert both sticks and boot

NOTE: You can yank the arcade_usb stick out (which stops Attract Mode), tinker with stuff on it on another computer, then stick it back in (Attract Mode will start again with new settings etc).

NOTE: Linux Is CaSe SeNsiTiVe!!!

---
Hardware:

CPU must be 64bit!

It *should* work with almost anything provided it supports decent OpenGL levels required by the SFML lib AM uses. I provide two ISO's; one with previous gen of Nvidia support, and one for current gen - both ISO's should support Intel and AMD/ATi without issue.

The hardware I run this on at the moment with great success is:
- AMD Athlon 64,
- 512Mb of RAM,
- Nvidia 8600GT
and shaders work very well in AM and in Mame using bgfx. I do get some slow-down on this hardware with more complex themes or ones that try to display a whole lot of video snaps at once.

---
Installing:

If you are experienced with Linux, you can install this ISO to the local HDD of the machine you want it on, there are two scripts to help get you through; installer, and install-arcade. install-arcade (WIP!) will nuke the HDD and install the ISO unguided, whereas installer will do it with your help.

NOTE: The ISO's don't include EFI boot as of yet, so booting and installing will be old-fashioned BIOS style for now.

NOTE: Feedback is welcomed. For issues though, please create them on Gitlab, or if you don't have an account on there PM me and I'll add the issue.

OMG! Luke! Where have you been :D

The cab is looking good tho.

I finished study (Software Engineering), got a job, and just had a child. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm 35 this year, it's never too late to study or have children.

I also built some extra cabs over the years. Maybe I should make a thread on them.

Would love a setting to permanently set the rotation. Can't figure out how to get AM to save it.

amd 3core 3.5 i think lol
amd ghost 7770 1g grafix 12 gigs ddr3
asus mobo

Great! It should run pretty well on that hardware.

The machine I have in my arcade cab is:
  • AMD Athlon64 3200
  • 512Mb RAM
  • Nvidia 8600GT
And it runs amazingly well for most games - I've not tried anything above mid-90's or 3D.

ISO's available here
Readme.md is here.

For a quick start, write the ISO to a USB drive, then get another USB drive to format with a new partition scheme and partition using either FAT, NTFS, or EXT4 - this partition must be labeled as arcade_usb. On this arcade_usb drive, copy the contents of this directory.

Plug both drives in and boot from the first one (it will be older bios boot only for now).

Be warned though, that quick start is set up for my machine - but is a good example.

You can unplug that arcade_usb at any time when the machine is running and the machine will stop attractmode only, plug it back in and it will start attractmode again - good for making changes using another machine. All configuration done on the arcade machine is saved to this drive too.

lol ya i do get the gist. ive played with ubuntu mint and puppy. but again my cmd line sucks.... i mean i know how to cut and paste... lmao!! ;)

thank you

What hardware do you use? I'll build an iso that you can use directly. Currently have it booting the USB, and then loading AttractMode and mame settings + roms from a second USB drive. It's working a treat.

I'm in the process of making this work as a live usb that then looks for another usb drive with a particular label, then mounts it and starts attract mode - should make it dead easy to use so long as you have the right hardware.
Plug in two USB drives, one with live iso, one with attractmode + roms and art, and boot up.

You might be interested in my work-in-progress arcade setup based on Arch Linux.

yes VERY!!!
1  thing though... how do i use it... im not very good with command line jargon. i dont suppose it has an instructions readme does it??  :D

Working on it. It assumes at least some knowledge of Linux though.

What sort of monitors are you guys using?
Does this CRT shading needs something special? or do you get better results with better monitors?

Can I expect an OK result on my old DELL 1907FP 1280x1024 monitor ?

thanks

Should be fine. I use an old 19" LCD in one of my machines. I find if you're using shaders, the higher the res you set the screen, the better the shaders effects. Not always true though as Mame can be set to switch res. And it can have an impact on performance.

Thanks liquid8d.

Bit worried about that opengl context error. Honestly this is a head scratcher for me. I'm going to start a windows VM and see if I can replicate the behaviour.

Works absolutely flawless in Linux.

--Starting to suspect Surfaces. Seems this only happened to you guys after I switched from rendering everything directly to the window, to rendering objects to their own surfaces.
May need to call in Raygun, I don't know my way around the code base very well, so can't pin-point the difference between the Linux build and OSX/Winblows.

I was told that 1.5.3 is windows only for fixing multimonitor bug.

I've tested with v1.5.2 as well, works perfect for me. (Linux only).

Maybe you can email me your AM configs so i can have a look and see if something else may be causing it. (And also, the new terminal output.)

Edit: Can you try removing the attract.am file, and removing the "flat_blue" settings section from attract.cfg.
I've only just started reading the AM source seriously, so I'm not sure this will achieve much. Looks like AM just overwrites the config section. But I'm not so sure about the attract.am which is the last saved state file.

my AM version is 1.5.2

I will try clean install of everything from scratch next week - because of the other bug/crash that I want to test.
But the thing is that with FLAT BLUE layout everything was working around version 2.x (at least that mirror thing) and got broken with version 3.0 - and I didn't changed anything.

So yes - I'll try a clean setup as well as installing it on my other mac with different OS X version.
I'm hoping that there is something wrong with my setup and I can fix it with clean install. Otherwise I'll have no choice but to stop using AM and find other FE that is working on my computer.  :'(

Ah, see I'm using v1.5.3. Please upgrade before you do too much else. :)
