General / Noob VS Filters redux

Just when I think i have a grasp of Attract Mode filtering, I get slapped right back down to size.  I want to make a filter that leaves out fruit machines.  Simple right?  Ive already imported catver.ini successfully, and tried to filter them like this:

Filter Name
No Fruit For YOU

Rule:
target: category
comparison: does not contain
filter value: fruit machines

That should work no???

I know this is going to be simple. but all of a sudden, when scrolling through  lists, they come up rotated.  I rotate it back, yet next cycle through, its back on its side lol....

Id like to think that I pick things up quick computerwise, but for the life of me I can't get a grasp on lists and favorites.  Could someone post a couple of their examples?  For example in mame, i like only 1981 games. How would I go about that? Thanks for your time!
