does anyone use attract mode as a media center, I would like to put all my movies on my tv through my pc.

It's certainly possible but Kodi is much better suited for a Media Center. It will get all the artwork and provide a better interface for Movies and TV Shows. You can also launch Attract-Mode from Kodi to make things pretty seemless.

Last night I was playing around with it and got it to work with vlc. When I exit the movie with the hot key is goes black until I push a button on the keyboard then it goes back to a/m. Any ideas.

You can try one of these configuration changes.

Configure-->General-->Window Mode = Full Screen (or maybe something else)
or
Configure-->Emulators--><emulator name>-->Exit Hotkey = <set to what you want>

try settings for VLC Movies from here
AM Version : 2.6.1
Input : Mad Catz Brawlstick; Mouse; Keyboard; Xbox360 Wireless
Cabinet : Yes
OS : Windows10 Pro
System : Dell Precision T3500 ; Intel X5650 ; 12GB RAM
