The info source is chosen by pressing up or down after selecting it...mess will use the mess exe to grab info. mame will use your mame.exe  to grab info. You can use gamesdb.net to grab info for other systems or emulators from the web (thus using that website for an info source. That is what the system tag is for. If you use gamesbd.net you have to specify a system (e.g. Nintendo Entertainment System) so that it knows where or what to look for. These are called scrapers. they pull images and other artwork from the web to your computer to make attract mode look "not so bland". Like a marquee arcade game to be displayed when you select it or a picture of the game. I've not had much luck with the scrapers but there are other places to get that stuff

http://www.progettosnaps.net/snapshots/ and
http://emumovies.com/forums/page/portal

are two places that come to mind for that.

the most important thing is to use the info thing set up for your mame list(s) so that you get a full name instead of a rom name. hope that helps :)

If I read that right it is working in 14.04, but he is having problems with 15.04. Yeah a lot of dependencies will not pull down in 15.04 I had to grab them all from the ubuntu website. Although I have not tried to compile or make a deb with 15.04 yet. Not sure it would make a difference...would it? I posted a list of the needed dependencies on this thread above. If compiling it on 15.04 and making a deb will make a difference let me know! :)

Hey akafox,
I'm fine with having a more general emulation board on the forum if you want...  Is this what you mean?  Are you volunteering to be the moderator  ;D ??

well guess I can. Glad you guys see my point. :) however I don't want to take anything away from any other fourms. I just know the crap involved to get going is all. Emulation is a pain sometimes. Setting people up with attact mode I think some how-tos would be great and I'd like to post them here. Again though I'm not wanting to make it a "one-stop emulation shop" either.

Raygun-

I think we need a sub-forum for cabinet DIYers as well. What do you think?

I can post a crazy list of links to all kinds of places like that omega and other places as well. A general help though might be a good starting place. I guess that is a good idea...but if they need specifics for emulator or problems we should point them to that emulator fourm? But if they need basic stuff..well we already do that here...but it's just scattered everywhere :P

'Your'e making what?, an arcade machine!, over my dead body, that bloody monstrosity isn't coming into the house!' from the wife.

I understand here point of view..but i could think of MANY other worse things you could build in the house..

I setup retropie/emulationstation on my rasp pi modle B+ I never had problem..mame4all is not the best..I had to delete a lot of stuff...and while somegames work..the sound is weird but it works and is there. I know the rasp pi2 is "bigger and badder" but the software will get better too.

I am going to get a rasp pi2 and make a arcade cocktail coffee table...one day *sigh* that way it looks like furniture and "belongs there" now everyone is happy :)

Emulators / Re: Open source mame

Well so far no big changes or anything.

I was wondering though...some emus are "old" they are still 32 bit programs..we are in a 64 bit world now. I am hoping that developers get on the band wagon and update the code to 64bit. Maybe they will..maybe they can't. Maybe in 20 more years when we have 128 bit CPUs and 64 bit code seems old the emus will die (not work)? (stella fecux snes9x fusion epsxe..ect...). Is anyone gonna care about 8/16/32  bit computers or game consoles...will they even know what they were like? maybe MESS will actually still emulate these systems better in 20 years. Will I care about my old nes or snes in the closet..or will they just be "grandpas old junk?" Yeah i'm whining...I hate getting old lol

After all that is what mame/mess and all these  emulators are for...for "historic backups" so that in 20 30 years from now that generation can look and say "wow we have it easy..they had to use their hands to play." lol

General / new attract mode front page topic
« on: July 23, 2015, 10:25:09 AM »
I am torn. I don't want to fill up the forum with help me with "xyz.2.11.2" emulator set up...(that is help with the emulator itself..not setting it up in AM) raygun..would you allow that on this forum? I don't mind doing a write up for setting them up in AM to post here. However I do like discussing "emulator stuff" can we make that a new "topic" instead of posting them in the "general" section? Also I do not mind helping people with setting up the emulator itself (that will be part of my write ups) but I just feel that should be left on the actual emulators forums..yet I understand getting help there sometimes is like pulling teeth or begging :( mameinfo world is scary big and would intimidate a newbie! I even posted a question there and never got an answer..waited 2 months!

what do you guys feel about this?!

also would a "how to set up xyz emulator with attract mode" be welcome do you think?

how many of you "emulator veterans" are willing to help out getting emulators themselves set up for people?

« on: July 14, 2015, 11:59:42 AM »
I know how to overlay in mame..and the scanlines don't get "captured" when I record my snaps. So this will overlay the snaps (all of them) in AM?! *hops on the wagon* I like it! :D

General / Re: Anyone tried MAME 0.161 yet?
« on: July 14, 2015, 11:50:58 AM »
Yeah yeah I know this thread is old...but I have mame 1.60 on my linux box and it runs very poorly. Lots of freezing and stuttering. I have not tried 1.61-1.63 (i'm too lazy to compile lately) so I have to ask anyone else having this problem? (in windows even?)

General / Re: Deleting roms
« on: July 14, 2015, 11:45:26 AM »
I use a tool called romlister https://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister/ to delete most of mine..made it SO much easier! The guide is here: http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/RL_tutorials No it's not perfect and it will not make a list for attract mode, but it will make a .bat file so you can delete the roms you don't want very easily. I was able to cut out A LOT and saved a lot of space.

General / Re: mame ui 64 get an error on AM
« on: July 14, 2015, 11:37:39 AM »
just out of curiosity..why are you running MAME UI? AM would be your UI (in a sense) I would think stock mame would be better..just my opinion. I know that i had this problem setting up my machine after an ..umm..upgrade...I has to wipe out my mame.ini(s) Turned out that my mame.ini was being read from my "ini" folder instead of my mame folder. I deleted all my ini files and started from scratch.

Well looking at my retroarch set up I have three mame cores. "mame 2003" , "mame 2010" , "mame 2015" depends on what type of system (or rom set) you want or have.

« on: July 14, 2015, 11:17:53 AM »
Yeah as soon as I can get me a clean card to run this on i'll try it. I am curious about the retro cores though. I was able to pull out a lot more on it when i used retroarch on my WII. I only have a RPI B+ (bought it a week before the PI 2 came out (doh!) there was something I didn't like using retroarch though...can't remember from the top of my head.... As for the rasp pi 2 I understand it can handle mame 1.34 (same as my WII). Again good work man.
