General / Re: WII LINUX?
« on: August 12, 2018, 07:06:29 PM »
Yes it can be done. I have done it. You have to have the White WII with version 4.3..I think. There is a program that you get and put your MAC address into and then it does all the changes and sets it up for you you just have to install it.."Letter Bomb" I think it is.

Normally you use a flaw in a game to "hack it" (Softmod) but there is a stand alone exe out there somewhere..but i can't remember where..if i find it I'll post it here. It works great. I can play Atari2600 5200 7800 NES Snes SMS Sega Megadrive/Genisis and some MAME roms..on and Turbo graphics-16/PC Engine and DOSBox.

That is what I used before I had my PI. You need at least a 8GB SD card..it might handle a 16GB..I don't remember.

MY penny counted for something?!   :o

Does that mean Nintendo doesn't care about rom sites tomorrow either?   ;D

(glad I could help somebody out there!)

General / Re: Retroarch and Attractmode. How?
« on: August 12, 2018, 02:53:40 PM »
First of all if you want help with that you need to understand how retroarch commands work. Go look at the retroarch wiki for that. That has nothing to do with Attract mode in a sense. I can make Attract Mode run like a Jukebox if i want to using a standard configuration for setting up a emulator.

And note that RetroArch is not a one stop solution to everything. There are many stand alone emulators that work MUCH better than any Retroarch core! Then again there are retroarch cores that run better than the emulator. It's trial and error plain and simple. Use what is best for you or what you like.

Below is your standard Retroach core config

executable           retroarch
args                 -L "path to libretro core"[romfilename]"

Example:

   Linux:
executable           retroarch
args                   -L /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libretro/nestopia_libretro.so "[romfilename]"

  Windows:
executable           retroarch
args                   -L C:\retroarch cores\nestopia_libretro.so "[romfilename]"

That will load the nestopia core (A Nintendo Entertainment System emulator) for NES games.

Retroarch is NOT an emulator. The cores are (in a sense). But the cores can not be called (run/started/executed) by themselves to run they must be called by retroarch first! Thus why the executable is ONLY Retroarch. Then the args line contains all the other needed info.

For this to work you have to have retroarch configured correctly FIRST! Thus you have to tell it where your cores are and BIOSes ect. Attract Mode will NOT do it for you!

That step should be included in this guide ... in details. Finally works as it should now.

Done

It was not included because it was not written for that purpose. It was written from a raw single mame version. It was not written for people that use retropie on a PC..because I never knew you could do that at the time. My thought was why use a retroarch core for mame on a PC when you can use the stand alone exe which is more updated and runs better? Emulation Station using RetroPie can build a list from the games database (I think) (if you are off-line you are outta luck!)  Atrract Mode was not made that way..extra coding that was not needed at the time.

 dukpoki and Mike_IronFist

I agree with both of you. It depends on your use of the item..plain and simple.

If you want to be "serious about emulation" then you use a PC. A PC will run almost anything you throw at it and more. But honestly if you build a dedicated emulation PC out of a PC..well then it is a "gimmick item" as well, just a much more powerful one.

You can be "serious about emulation" with a pi easily and more so. Much easier to carry a pi around than a PC in a box for sure! When it comes to the pi is is not really about the games..it's what you can build with it. That is what the pi was made for..thus why popular.

And..price..granted I can do some searching and find a 50 quid old PC or be given someone's "old junk" and it will be better than the pi. But why? I can spend 50 quid on a machine that is "new". I don't have do find and old IDE HDD or some VGA type monitor to get the old junk to work. And that is my point...people want things simple the pi makes it that way..and so does retropie. People don't want to muck around with windows settings ect ect. As hard core gaming is and gaming PCs are..the smart phone games make up 60% of gamers..NOT the Switch or PS4 or XBox one. most people want plug and play..most people want simple. You can make that with a pi.

Why do you think the NES Mini and SNES mini are so popular? And funny thing about that is?...it's built on a pi type board..and uses emulation to make it work! Same thing we are doing here..and they are making money with it..because that is what people really want. (and yes they can it is their stuff..not going there).

But all that being said...none of it matters. What it comes down to is people want a choice. They will use what they want because of price usability or just want..PERIOD. Because that is the way people are.

As for you caminiti45 you made it for the pi..I get that. Just know there are PC users out there that would like it too I am sure..although that's a BIG SNES mini. xD  Your theme is great don't give up..like i said the pi4 will be out soon..ish. But I understand life and how it works..it gets in the way a lot! I just thought maybe working on the PC side of it might help to get ideas or fix problems on the pi side..you never know. *shrugs* That and this is what open source is about.release your theme and let people look at the code. They might spot some things you miss or have a better way of implementing something then it can get to working as intended. That is up to you though..it's your baby.

Keep it up..and thanks for the hard work and not asking anything in return except maybe a "Hey use this please I made it for you to enjoy" and people using it and a "Thank you". :D

I agree..but post this in the themes topic so that others can see it as well..it pertains more to that..

However it does need to be in a place ray will see it (here) we don't let him out often so he doesn't get to other parts of the forum much. Can't have him slacking off making our favorite front end now can we?  :P ;D

Hey trust me..I understand...been there done that!

I was only able to build one set for my soft-modded WII..have not had much luck beyond that *lol*

but it makes it MUCH easier to update and maintain for sure!

You are using retropie software correct?

There is a way to cover that up yes

1.  Goto "Retropie"
2. Goto "Run command configuration"
3. Make launch menu Disabled
4. make Launch Menu Art Enabled

That is a quick way to hide any loading text...you will ave to have all your flyers/boxart scrapped for it to work nicely

I'm getting really close to nearing completion of my Pi build.

I have said that a hundred times already...suuuurrrrrreeee you are! *lol* no really I hope it is true..I understand the work put into it..not easy is it? *lol* :D

Emulators / Re: Best Compression for Specific Emulators
« on: July 21, 2018, 04:03:55 PM »
Well I need to figure out a linux equivalent of that command line..all it did for me was compress it into one big archive  ::) :P

so I made a bash script just to test it out though..why..because I am curious that's why  :P ;D

soooo..my findings

SNES roms randomly chosen:

Uncompressed              .zip                              .rar                         .7z
Count: 103                  Count: 95*                  Count: 96*              Count: 103
Size: 137.7Mb              Size:68.5Mb                 Size: 65.5               Size: 62.1Mb
Saved: N/A                   Saved: 69.2Mb             Saved: 72.2Mb        Saved: 75.6Mb

*Yes some files were missing...something to do with my script I am sure. Not going for accuracy here just information

So 7z is the "best" compression and with large sets a little can add up. However I think the space saved is not going to make a big difference. But it's good to know if you have a smaller SD card. "A couple of gigs" might be a big thing. You can not deny though that compressing iso/bin files to chd is a good idea!

As larger SD cards become affordable then space will not matter..at least until we fill them up with more and larger files..you know.."because we have room"  ;)

But as the PI improves in hardware and capability so will the number of games that can be emulated..so will we ever "get ahead"? *lol*

Are you on a PC or a raspberry pi?

Secondly mame (arcade) roms are handled differently it is not the best idea to use gamesbd.net for arcade roms assuming you are on a PC..if you are on raspberry pi you MIGHT have to do this instead

You want to use list xml as the infosource/scraper to build your list
for  the addional information you want you have to add the correct files to the Additional Import files

use nplayers.ini for number of players http://nplayers.arcadebelgium.be/
use catver.ini for the categories    http://www.progettosnaps.net/catver/

@informix okay I have to ask is everything starting correctly when using Attract Mode? (Thus games are loading no errors no crashes?)

I am not too sure what the problem is myself. I have the same problem..from the mame GUI I get an error.. however everything works when started from AM just fine. So I have not bothered to look into it.

To update your mame set (the easy way) you need a program called CLRMame Pro (or another rom manager) https://mamedev.emulab.it/clrmamepro/#downloads and you need a .dat (data) file from here http://www.progettosnaps.net/dats/

BEFORE YOU RUN CLRMAME PRO ON YOUR ROMS MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF THEM..YES THAT MEANS CHDS AS WELL!!!!!

this video should help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0h5wvz1fjN8
no i did not make the video I am not to blame for anything there!

you are correct about maybe getting a new rom from a better board or a new missing rom or even a renamed rom. And that is about it honestly you can use and OLD rom set in a never version of mame..IF..the rom has NEVER been updated at all...i.e. the info never changes. However as said above..well that happens quite often for many roms every update. So you may be missing a rom that the newer version of mame wants..or it may just be updated and you don't have the updated one so mame gripes.

A rom manager does four things mainly...it merges your roms..fixes your roms..updates your roms..and checks for missing roms

Fixing may just mean renaming..but sometimes it's resizing..
.
Updating means that it sees that a new rom has been added to a existing rom and opens it places the missing (new) file(s)into your original.

Merging means is puts all the roms into one zip (parent and clone together (can waste space that way) but can make it easier to manage

Missing..well it checks for missing roms

More about romsets here http://docs.mamedev.org/usingmame/aboutromsets.html
and here http://www.xente.mundo-r.com/mame/Update286.html yes it gets technical
