General / Re: Which linux distro for my dedicated retro emulation PC

It probably depends on what emulators you are going to try and run?

A few of the emulators are stuck in 32bit builds and the like, so ease of installing 32 bit libraries should be a consideration. I considered lubunutu for that reason.

Themes / Re: Hyperspin themes in Attract-mode

This is looking great. Looking forward to trying it.
Never used hyperspin but like the system selection, so will be great to be able to configure this in AM.

You normally change the theme via the display configuration

Press Tab to go to the config menu, go to displays, select the display you want and it should be possible to change the layout there.

General / Re: Does AM crash while generating its game list for anyone else?
« on: February 12, 2016, 02:34:06 AM »
This might sound strange, but i did get a crash recently when generating a mame list, but it only occurred after I was missing around with displays. Normally i just used cools but I was playing with a different one (not even the mame display!) and it  crashed two times in a row during rom list generation, then i reverted back to cools and it worked again.

This is probably just a red herring but thought I would mention it, i dismissed it myself as being a random event given one thing shouldn't really affect the other.

General / Re: Requesting Permission for a Guide and Review
« on: February 11, 2016, 12:27:48 AM »
I am a new member here, but discovered attract-mode late last year. I am a linux user and to me so far at least, AM seems like the best option for that. I currently use it as a front end to nes (fceux), snes (zsnes), mame, megadrive (dgen-sdl), master system (kega-fusion) on a 10 year old laptop. I plan to build a proper machine at some point with a lot more emulators and will certainly use AM for it and hope to stick to linux for that too. Anyhow the point of me saying this is I think the multi-platform aspect of AM should be a part of the review as i notice most of the your videos (though very good) are windows centric.

2. Hiding an emulator would be nice but... I would prefer an option to hide displays.

Yes, hiding displays would be as good if not better

General / Feature ideas for attract-mode
« on: January 08, 2016, 03:12:05 AM »
Just to say, I set up attract-mode on and old linux 10 year old laptop with a usb ps2 joypad connected, over the xmas holidays, currently with the cools layout and everything works great. So thanks to everyone who has put work into this project

I initially set it up as and easy to use front end to let my 5 year old son play some of the retro classics i enjoyed in my youth, on various emulators, though now i am considering building a proper dedicated arcade type machine, adding in some extra emulators. Anyhow below is a list of ideas of what would be handy features (maybe some of this exists already)

1. A field on the rom list for age categorization so i could easily filter out games my son is too young to play  (so i can still maintain a single set up and turn the option on and off).
2. To be able to hide, rather than delete an existing emulator. Useful when setting up a new emulator as I don't want my son to browse to it, til it is ready, it also lets me restrict choice so he can be happy playing on the megadrive/snes games rather than constantly flicking through to new things.
3. An emulator play-ability status field, so you can build a rom list of all titles but filter out those not currently playable so everything can be kept in one directory for the time when the game becomes playable. Useful for under development emulators (e.g. i recently built reicast and found all types of interesting variations on what works and what doesn't)  when I don't want my son starting up broken games.

General / mulit disc games and rom list
« on: January 07, 2016, 01:43:12 AM »
Apologies if this has been discussed before.

I am wondering if anyone has good strategies for dealing with games that span multiple discs in relation to the rom list geneation for an emulator.

For example say a game is spread over 3 iso files (<game>[disc1].iso,<game>[disc2].iso,<game>[disc3].iso) in the rom list you would only want the game to appear the once and not 3 times. Can this be handled in attract-mode?
