Title: NOOB newbie questions, first time Linux Ubuntu 14.04 LTS .....need help please?
Post by: Bsoder52 on March 31, 2015, 07:18:53 PM
Hi all, just installed this version of Linux?  Seems nice, hopeful to install attract-mode and mame on this OS?

Do I use the Attract-Mode ArchLinux AUR Package ?  If so looks like i have to instll ArchLinux first?  is that a whole new LInux OS?

Thanks for any help!

Always glad to have a new penguin! :) Yes it is possible to install AM (attract mode) on linux ubuntu. That's exactly how i run it. (The windows version gave me problems. though I think it was the computer not AM.) Go here first. http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=130.msg548#msg548 (http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=130.msg548#msg548) Ubuntu uses what is called "deb" packages. The one you see (AUR package is for arch linux) (It's still linux but just a different kind of linux..umm how to explain...still windows (vista) but different windows (7)..does that help?) Anyway I do need a little information from you first though. I need to know if you are running a 64-bit version or a 32 bit version. Open a terminal (easiest way is to press Alt (hold it down) and then press F2) in the box that pops up type "terminal" (if that doesn't work try "konsole") don't use the quotes. You'll see something like this
Code: [Select]
...generic x86_64 the 64 means 64-bit if you see a 32 (or i386) then you need the 32-bit package. After downloading it you can double click on it to start your package manager. However you need have root (administrator in windows speak) privileges to install it. If you do enter your password and it will install itself. (You need to be connected to the internet to install AM..and most other programs for linux). If you get stuck just ask here and I or anyone other penguins will help you. Honestly I love AM in linux much better.

thanks for the info!  I was able to open the box up and type terminal and konsole, but they just brought up a picture of the flywheels adn the words terminal and konsole under the flywheels logo.  Maybe it would be easier for a newbie to just get the Linux OS mean for the code?  Linux Arch I think it was?

OK I'm confused there..but maybe I confused you. (I haven't used ubuntu in two years.) I think what you are seeing is..well what it does is guess the program you want before typing it all out. Just click on one with your mouse..or finish typing it out and press enter.

Because you have Ubuntu (and sorry for not seeing this earlier) Type the word "terminal" in that box and press the enter key. Then type "uname -mrs" (no quotes)...press enter. Type in your next post what it says in your terminal please.

We'll take it one step at a time I have no problem with that. (Wish I had someone helping me with linux years ago lol) Honestly I was wanting to do a write up to help out..maybe you were sent to be my guinea pig?! MAAAAWWW HAAAHHAHHA...oh wait..helping not scaring you off. ;)

No honestly I am willing to help and guide no problem...and you would be helping me out as well! :)

Arch yes...but arch is not for beginners! Ubuntu is better suited for you I promise. Either way you'd have to do the same thing. A AUR package is for arch linux...but it's the same thing just packaged different. (same present different wrapping).

I think arch is difficult for the sake of being difficult. :)
I almost had my 32 bit build for attract mode with older advmame ready then I tried to get creative with the auto log on and hosed the synoptic and the shut down / restart options. No idea what I did but I corrupted a bunch of scripts in the sbin directory.

But it auto logged in. Ha!

I'm going to get back on the 32 bit live build this weekend for older hardware.
I'll make sure to take screenshots this time.
It won't be Ubuntu but the basic principle will be the same.

I tried, but I'm getting the same thing.  I try to click on the icons for terminal or console and click enter and nothing happens.

I think I found it.... after some googling.
Clicked on System Settings, Details, and it tells me the the OS is 64 bit!
:)

Now what?

Hey man,
I'm not an Ubuntu user so I'm not familiar with the desktop, but I use Linux and just wanted to say don't let that guy on that other forum you posted on discourage you from using Linux.
It's a learning curve.

Rightly said nitrigen! Linux can be difficult but the rewards (freedom) are way worth it I think! I applause you for your efforts Bsoder..stick with it. It will be worth it!

Ok next step Bosder go the the link to the packages..http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=130.msg548#msg548 (http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=130.msg548#msg548) Download the one that says "attractmode_1.5.1_amd64.deb". Once it is download you will need to "install" it (windows speak). For that you need to enter your "root" )or "sudo" sometimes it's called) password. From there it will install. Might say I need "dependencies" or something like that. You need to say yes or ok becuase you need those files. Once you have it installed look under games. Click and it should start! :) If you need more help always ask glad to help (like setting up attract mode...but there are more people that can do the one besides me :P )

nirto..you are gonna go total CLI? I would have but I wasn't sure that was the best route for a noob. Hard core man. *bows honourably* As for not helping as well as I should..I forgot that ubuntu used the unity desktop..and it reminds me why I don't use it! lol

Good Bsoder! Glad you got it. If you need help setting up AM troll the forums or just ask. (new thread). I have to ask though..what is "app grid"? do you mean apt-get?
Title: Re: NOOB newbie questions, first time Linux Ubuntu 14.04 LTS .....need help please?

I use pclinuxos and since there are no packages I gotta compile from source so I've gotten use to the terminal.
It took a little while before I was not afraid of it. Lol.

Appgrid after some Google ing appears to be an alternative app store for Ubuntu.

yes alternative app store with a build in .dat installer!  I just right clicked on the .deb file and it gives you and option to install via app grid, very user friendly (so far at least...cause I don't really understand where or how app grid installed the file, but app is working).

I downloaded some roms to usb, but having trouble moving them from usb to Mame.
If someone could help me with this I should then be able to test mame and then configure attract mode, (I hope)!  :)

I installed ubuntu in a virtual machine to help you out since I have no idea on the interface.

I assume you installed mame?
when you run mame it creates a hidden folder called .mame with the config and other folders.
So goto files on the left.
once your home directory opens go up to the top tool bar & click edit.
Choose preferences.
Check "show hidden & backup files"
hit close.
you should see the .mame folder.

not when you plugged in your usb drive it should of showed up as a mounted device.
goto it & just copy your roms to the .mame rom folder like on windows.

Nitrogen,

Thanks so much for the additional help!  I'm almost able to do this, but when I copy my roms and look for the .MAME rom folder all i find in the .Mame folder is a file called cfg....so not sure where to copy the roms yet.  In a windows based install I would normally look for a roms folder to dump them into, but I don't see that, just the cfg folder.

Thoughts?

Thanks again!

odd.
ok.
I guess some distro's create the proper folder structure & some don't.

first you need to create a mame.ini config file.
goto your your ./Mame folder and open a terminal then type "mame -cc" without the quotes.

then you can create your rom folder.
right click in the .mame folder like in windows & select new.
call it roms for simplicities sake.

after that you can open the mame.ini file & look for the path for the roms.
look at the folder path.
should say something like $HOME/.Mame/rom(s)
that may or may not work with the `buntu's.

I use /home/[user name]/MAME/roms  with [user name] being the name of the user you are logging in with.

When you say go to the .mame folder and open a terminal....do you mean highlight the .mame folder and press alt & F2?  Or do you mean go into the folder (where I see the cfg file and press alt &f2?

I've tried both and trying Mame-CC and get nothing.  Must be doing something wrong.

so i used the search bar and typed in mame.ini...and it brought up the mame.cfg box...specifically called mame.cfg(~/.attract/emulators)-gedit

within this Mame.CFG it has:

# Generated by Attract-Mode 1.0.2
#
executable          $HOME/.mame/mame
args                    [name]
rompath              $home/.mame/roms/
romext                .zip;.7z;<DIR>
listxml                  mame
artwork           marquee            $home/.mame/marquees
artwork           snap                  $home/.mame/videos;$HOME/.mame/snap
artwork          flyer
artwork          wheel

I'll have to reread your instructions now and see if I have a clue....    :)   (I'm such a newbie!)

Sorry I didn't get to you faster holiday got me. I have ubuntu loaded in a virtual box. The reason Bsoder has no folders is because mame has not been run yet. Click the dash button and then type "terminal". (Remember no quotes) Click on the icon that says "Terminal" to start it. (Also it might put it in the side bar on the left..if it does..just click it and it should pop up.) Then in the terminal type "mame". After the first run it will come up and complain about "no games check your mame.ini"..just hit enter or esc it will close and will make all the folders. Then in the terminal type like nitro said:

"..mame -cc"
first you need to create a mame.ini config file.

(Sorry for plagiarizing you there nitro :P)

it will create it in your home folder (click home icon) when it (Nautilus) loads click veiw --> then select "show hidden files". You should see a ".mame" folder. (the dot indicates it's hidden.) First move your new mame.ini to your .mame folder. Now click your .mame folder to open it. Then right click on the mame .ini and select "open with text editor". Once open look for:
Code: [Select]
#
# CORE CONFIGURATION OPTIONS
#
readconfig                1
writeconfig               0

#
# CORE SEARCH PATH OPTIONS
#
rompath                   $HOME/.mame/roms;/usr/local/share/games/mame/roms;/usr/share/games/mame/roms <--this
hashpath                  /usr/share/games/mess/hash
samplepath                $HOME/.mame/samples;/usr/local/share/games/mame/samples;/usr/share/games/mame/samples <--this
artpath                   $HOME/.mame/artwork;/usr/local/share/games/mame/artwork;/usr/share/games/mame/artwork
ctrlrpath                 $HOME/.mame/ctrlr
inipath                   $HOME/.mame;/etc/mame <-- this

change your paths where I have marked "<--this" make them look like mine. Then from the terminal type "mame" again. You should see a "gui" pop up and your games listed..type a name to search. Press enter to start it.

As for moving your games from your USB drive to your mame folder (you MUST have your mame.ini in your mame folder and your paths set right..last you MUST have at least one game in the folder or mame will complain no matter if the other things are correct!) First insert your usb drive..it should mount..your drive should appear in the file manager (Nautilus) press the F3 key..it should split (you'll see the drive open twice in the same panel (window). Then navigate to your .mame folder (click "home" on the left panel (remember show hidden files if you don't see a .mame folder) next click your ".mame" folder and then open your "roms" folder. On the side that has your USB drive click it to make it "active" after that press and hold Ctrl and then the "A" key. (it highlights everything) then right click the choose copy to other pane.

I hope the above helped you Bosder. You posted that reply while I was writing mine lol. What you have there in your post is the Attract Mode mame.ini NOT the mame.ini you need for mame. I hope my reply was helpful. I will check back later tonight and see if I can help you further if you have problems.

Thanks Fox!  Your post was very helpful indeed.  I was able to create the Mame.ini file and add it  to my .MAME file.  I'm to the point where I can configure the settings you posted....but I'm hesitant because you state it will then created a list of the roms.....but I have not installed the roms anywhere yet.  Should I do that prior to editing the Mame.ini config?  If so how?  Thanks for the clarification.  Bsoder

OK got it working!  So cool to play puckman again!  :)
many of the roms that I tried at first came up as missing a rom file to use though...so going to have some work to audit my roms list and find versions that work with this version of Mame, but to be expected I suppose.

Now to configure attract mode I suppose...hmm where to start?

Glad we could help you Bosder! :) As for attract mode..here is how to set that up..form the (unfinished) man page:

Code: [Select]
QUICKSTART To begin after starting attract mode from either the command line or the menu it will ask you which
language to use. You will then be taken to the Configure screen. To get started quickly goto "emulators" then choose the
emulator you wish to set up. Most are preset with the basic info (or you may choose to make your own). The minimum you
need to set up to use Attract Mode is the executable path, the emulator Command Arguments, the Rompath, and the rom
extension.

Thus to set up MAME would be this:
path: /usr/games/mame
args: [NAME]
rom path: $HOME/.mame/roms
ext:     .zip
After all the info is entered choose Generate Collection/Rom List press enter and Attract Mode will generate a list. Then select
back and then choose back again. You should be presented with the "Attract Man" layout and a list or your roms. To start a
game simply use the up and down arrows and press Enter or the LEFT Control (Ctrl) key. From here your emulator takes control!

DETAILED USE:
DEFAULT KEYS: UP arrow moves up one selection/game
Down arrow moves down one selection/game
                        TAB enters configure screen
Escape exits Attract Mode or it exits the current configuration screen

I got this far and see my roms for MAME listed in the Attract-Mode Pac man screen.  I can cycle up and down the roms list on the GUI, but pressing enter or left ctr does not launch any games?

Then you have something wrong in your Attract mode configuration..post it here and i'll look. Sounds like you have your mame binary (program) path wrong..

Code: [Select]
#
executable           mame
args                 [name]
rompath              $HOME/.mame/roms/
romext               .zip
system               Arcade
info_source          mame
import_extras        $HOME/.mame/catver.ini;$HOME/.mame/nplayers.ini;$HOME/.mame/controls.ini
artwork    flyer           $HOME/.mame/flyers
artwork    marquee         $HOME/.mame/marquees
artwork    snap            $HOME/.mame/videos;$HOME/.mame/snap
artwork    wheel           $HOME/.mame/wheel

the above is mine..compare it and see if it works..if not post yours please :)

Title: Re: NOOB newbie questions, first time Linux Ubuntu 14.04 LTS .....need help please?
Post by: akafox on April 06, 2015, 06:38:54 AM
Try to make your set up like mine:

Code: [Select]
executable           mame
args                 [name]
rompath              $HOME/.mame/roms/
romext               .zip
info_source          mame

Remember Start attract mode..press the TAB key, then in the emulators selection go to mame then open it. Press enter to highlight then type the information above. Except for info_source you have to press up or down to select. (or you can copy and paste it into a blank file, name it "mame.cfg" and then toss it into /.attract/emulators..this will overwrite your original!). If that doesn't work..still post you mame.cfg and i'll look at it.

Got it working!  Only problem is that a good half of the roms aren't working with this version of Mame.  Is there a good tool to use to audit the working/non-working rom list for Linux? Or should I just do it manually?

thanks again for all the help!
Title: Re: NOOB newbie questions, first time Linux Ubuntu 14.04 LTS .....need help please?

Yes actually. The best one is called CLRMamepro. http://mamedev.emulab.it/clrmamepro/ (http://mamedev.emulab.it/clrmamepro/) You'll need a .dat file for your version of mame here http://www.progettosnaps.net/dats/ (http://www.progettosnaps.net/dats/) (look under the heading "MAME.dats"). A help website for it is here http://mameworld.info/easyemu/clrmameguide/clrmame-guide.html (http://mameworld.info/easyemu/clrmameguide/clrmame-guide.html) To see your version of mame move the highlight to the "configure general inputs" or "exit" at the bottom..the very bottom will tell you the version of mame you have...the dat file you get needs to be one that matches your version of mame. CLRMamePro should work under WINE in linux. You can use it in windows of course if that way is easier..you'll just have to copy all the new ones over to your linux box. Note: You may not be able to fix any games if your set is really old versus a newer version of mame. They rename, add, delete, and change files sometimes with every release. WARNING! MAKE A BACK UP YOUR ROMS BEFORE YOU RUN THIS PROGRAM! Just in case...(you don't want to have to start over like I did ;) ) As to finding a new or update set..you are on your own. Number one rule of all forums is you NEVER post rom sites. You are free to google on your own however.

ok, i'm running 0.152 version of MAME.  I got the .DAT file and the CMP4018.exe file, but app grid won't open neither...says my app grid is not found.  So I went to my download center and uninstalled app grid and reinstalled app grid, but still getting the same error.  Wierd! Why not use the Mame in Ubuntu repositories?

nitro is right Bosder. Here is the best way (I think) to do just that. Now that you know how to open a terminal..do that first. In the terminal type "sudo apt-get update" (remember no  quotes!) enter your password (wait for it to finish) then type "sudo apt-get install *mame" enter your password..press y then enter. (You can install mess the same way you did mame if you want.) That should install the newest mame with some "support files" (catver.ini ect). if you get and error typing *mame just type mame (no asterisk). Also you can type "sudo apt-get install wine" so that you can run CLRMame Pro in linux. (right click on clrmamepro and choose "run with wine program loader" or something like that.)

and nirto -
I am still using mame 1.52 on one of my machines works fine. I am using that one because I have it patched. 1.52-1.56 had meoery leaks so I skipped them and 1.57-through 1.60 I can't seem to compile. Says I am missing SDL but I do have it installed *shrugs*  :o

Does Ubuntu still have synoptic or some other package handler?
That would make things easier.

.157 was the last no nag / highscore patched version I was able to compile.
I think I had to install every sdl2 Dev library to get it to work.

Yeah that's what I thought at first too. But then I thought no just type it all in a the console but yeah maybe you're right.

So to do that type "sudo apt-get update" then hit enter..let it do it's thing..then type "sudo apt-get install synaptic" then press enter. After installing synaptic you can close the console (terminal) Then start synaptic (click the dash button and search for synaptic). start that. enter your password. In synaptic you can search for mame and mess and wine and install them all in "one click". (right click the package name and then choose install..it will mark it green) Also while you are there you can install other emulators if you want. Then after you have done all that you click apply and it will install everything at once. This program is like the ubuntu store..but faster and you have more control.

I swear I have all of them installed. *sigh* I'll look again. Yeah I think they changed the tools on 1.58 and up. I'd like to do it because I want to try the multi-cart neogeo emulation..works really well. Thought it would be cool to set up a neogeo cab like that :)

I am running MAME out of the Ubunto Repositories... I think.  I downloaded it right out of the Ubunto download center.  Had no idea what version it was until I installed it though.

Working on my windows clrmamepro install, but realized when i went to download the 152 version of MAME, that my Windows PC is a 32bit and my Linux set-up is 64 bit.  Will it work to run clrmamepro to audit roms on a 32 and then load the roms to the 64bit pc?

If your machine is 32 bit and you want to move the roms to a 64 bit that is not a problem at all. This is why only the people that want to learn do emulation at all. To learn...it's a hell of a lot of hard work! But once it's done it's worth it. Now i won't be as awesome as this guy though! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cYB5DOP5E4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cYB5DOP5E4) I hope pinmame and visual pinball are still around when I go to build my pinball machine..like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9RULBcZT_M (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9RULBcZT_M)

Made some progress.  Got my profile set up and what not for CLRMame, went to scanner and it told me my rom path was not defined and to go to settings and do that.  So went to settings, pointed the rom path to my rom folder...but can't seem to get out of this windows box and back to the scanner option....options are set as default and save as def.

That is a pop-up window you save your settings and then close it down by clicking the x. The program itself is still there. It's confusing..I wondered myself the first time.

Well after the rebuild I went and dumped them onto my Linux Attract Mode set-up.  Refreshed the MAME games list and many work, many do not.  Noticeably all the larger game files have issues.  All the Street Fighter games after the first one only load 90-99% and then fail.  Those are the games that I'd play the most.  arg.
