Could post a log of the error...and...

because it is AM related might be better to post in the AM related section as is this is for problems with emulators themselves...

I wrote a tutorial on how to set up AM...

Emulators / Mame xml Controls
« on: August 05, 2023, 04:25:11 PM »
I am not looking for controls.dat or controls.xml Nor am am asking about filtering... (I filter my games outside of AM anyway...)

So when you build a list in AM with the info_source listxml when using mame it fills in the Control(s) part of  the list..great! But, How do you read it!? It doesn't make sense to me...

here is what i mean as an example:

Donkey Kong joystick (4-way),joystick (4-way)
The Amazing Adventures of Mr. F. Lea   joystick (4-way)

I thought maybe it showed if a game was single player or two-player, but the Players column is for that right?

It just confuses me because joystick (4-way),joystick (4-way) to me would mean a dual joystick say like Robotron: 2048. That however is listed as "double joystick" plainly enough...
And yes it could mean two joysticks on a single cabinet and you just take turns playing after one person dies...except if you look at both control panels for the games above, they both have single joystick!

A link is fine..I just can't find anything is all....(or if I am lucky and a mame dev sees this!) I just want to understand it so I can quit chasing my tail here...kindly explain to me what I am looking at :3

And I think Centipede and millipede are listed incorrectly as "joystick (8-way),trackball" As far as I know there was no centipede ever made with a  joystick. Unless there was a bootleg...which of course is normally labeled as a bootleg in mame. Also to me "joystick (8-way),trackball" mean to me that the game had a trackball AND a joystick for controls. like tron had a trigger-stick AND a dial in order to play.... but that I have to bring up on the mame forum itself..heh....

Anyway thanks to whoever answers me. It's not a huge deal..just trying to understand what I am looking at.

where did you get the download from?

try this version please https://github.com/oomek/attractplus/releases

also you are building your list with mame's xml file not any scrapers correct?

You have already made a romlist within AM correct?

Thus the games name (bat file) and a long name?

if so you can make fake game names..build your list on that..and THEN let the scrapper chew on that instead...(these games names are just empty txt files nothing more)

So I have to ask you could you provide me with a partial current AM list and part of your file tree of your DOS games please....

If I recall you are using the batch (.bat) files to be used as "roms" (i.e. say a mame setup)

As tested, Attract Mode is running fine on Ubuntu 22.04.  :)

Yes it does (penguins unite!..even if you are a fox :P )  however I do have a problem with AM crashing every once in a while now  :-\

basic "it works config":

# Generated by Attract-Mode v2.6.1
#
executable           xemu
args                 -dvd_path "[romfilename]" -full-screen
workdir              (your\path\here)
rompath              (your\path\here)
romext               .iso
system               microsoft xbox
info_source          thegamesdb.net

I was able to build a list and launch into full-screen mode from attract mode no problems. I was not able  to figure out how to close it via esc (key) or close it "cleanly" with a controller..I'll leave that to someone else :)

So xemu is based on qemu? the list of command-line options is staggering!  :o

General / Re: How to set up attract mode on a PC step by step
« on: April 15, 2022, 08:21:32 PM »
Thanks.  I do have a last_run.txt file which is somewhat the same but not exact but I don't have a display.txt file.

I do appreciate all the time and help you've put into this and I want to thank you but I think I'm going to just give up on the whole project.

Thanks though!

No reason to give up!

Actually if I recall I tried doing the same a year or so ago. It seems that the whole setup paths changed and i had to work from the path that the system gave me. I never tried it in windows 10 this was just on windows XP. I used a program called Instant sheller. If you are still poking around here I will give a whirl this weekend and post you a solution (hopefully!) no later than mid week..maybe end week?

Hang in there!

General / Re: Newbie installing AM, can you help?
« on: March 31, 2022, 04:01:01 PM »
so I take it nothing loads if you try to start a game directly from the command line of Mame itself or does a game load from there?

since you are using mame 0.241 you will need a 0.241 romset..I have two sets of mame roms too..none will work with the newest version of mame though..unless I update them to 0.241...but these does not mean ALL roms have been updated. Best thing to try is loading a game from he command line...mame will spit out any errors (missing rom files) you need...

remember a lot of roms need bioses...OR they need the parent roms (you need puckman (original rom) to run pac-man (clone rom) or roms get updated..thus needing new rom files or you may be missing chds (something tells me you know all that from your post though. :)

if you can load games just fine that way from mame  then..post your mame AM config please ..as that is most likely the problem...

Emulators / Re: Best Compression for Specific Emulators
« on: March 30, 2022, 10:09:51 AM »
Most of my care of compression was because I was using my Rasp pi 3 and SD cards were not cheap at the time..nor are they now at least a 1TB isn't and when I mean cheap I mean less then 30-40 of what ever currency you use...

Like progrets said, it really is better to use a cheap PC as they are way more capable. If the Rasp Pis stayed at 30-40 instead off 100 or more...then well the trade off for me was worth it. As you know though it did not stay that way and you cab pick up a used PC for a little more than a rasp pi4 now with a LOT more power and storage space.

I think the Pi zero 2 can do PSX (ps1) games just fine (and thus everything under it..aside from N64 and 3DO) I would think about getting two of them for the price of one pi 4...but you have to FIND one at that price..and well the pi4 can run dreamcast (some anyway and PSP..again some!) So again for just a few more of whatever currency you can get a "monster of a PC" compared to a rasp pi4 for dedicated emulation *shrugs*

...although there is that small noiseless form factor of the PI..and well maybe the price of a PI is worth having once it is set up (IF it ever is!) to sit behind the TV and be used so that it is easy to use so that others can use it..I can have my hard drive space back and keep people off my main machine..*shrugs*  just comes down to what you want to use it for..which is why it was made in the first place....

Yet i sit back and remember the first single MEGABYTE file (compressed I might add!) and i used to think it was HUGE for my 150 Megabyte hard drive on it! and yet things have not changed all that much have they lol

Emulators / Re: How ad this emulator PC6001VX????
« on: March 30, 2022, 09:17:07 AM »
Thanks for you atention Mark!

It's really a shame.. I'm "new" to programming, i am noobie... from 0 to 10 I understand only 1 or at most 2 in programming, so it's really a shame, I can't make "emulate" i cant make this emulator work in attract mode alone only my self.

First do not be so hard on yourself. Emulation is not easy..it never has been. Second emulating a old computer system is harder than games. Third emulating an old Japanese is computer is almost impossible (unless you are japanese of course!  ;D

I will look into it..I have that Emulator myself...or at least I thought i did...

from what I can tell it is not going to work under AM..the computer system itself doesn't allow for auto-loading of games that I can tell..so AM would be useless i think..I will be honest though..I took more time to learn how to use it then I did trying with AM...Japanese computers are a pain in the tail! I never could load the game from the GUI much less the command line in windows..

General / Re: Linux Mint UMA How do I install Attract Mode?
« on: March 30, 2022, 08:56:14 AM »
Using AM on linux is easy...but yes you do have to compile it..the wiki shows what dependencies you need and how to compile the source code and make it very simple to do:

https://github.com/mickelson/attract/wiki#compiling

look under Compiling (note that ubuntu version does NOT have to be 18..18 can be 18 or up. Also this works for ANY Ubuntu based versions Mint, Mate, ect.)

/switch to windows lol

Some days i agree with that statement  ;D but honestly I got into AM because it was the ONLY FE for Linux at the time..
Also I have a machine that I run Linux on here because it actually runs game on Linux better the Windows 7 it came with....

General / Re: configure fbneo
« on: March 30, 2022, 08:45:48 AM »
@JosephKorso 1. Do not post Rom links anywhere on this forum! Yes a lot of people probably know where they are or how to find them. How ever that has nothing to do with it. It just something you do not do! (moderator please remove the rom link)

2. May I ask why you are using Fightcade's Final burn Neo version under AM? There is no need for at at all what so ever....unless you are trying to create a new front end for fightcade to work in a cab. Fightcade has it's own front end UI so that you know what games are running and how or who is playing them thus some of your problems..if you bypass all of that:
1. you are not playing on-line at all, if you are bypassing the on-line aspect of it then why use fightcade at all? Essentially all you are doing is using finalburn neo. So go and get standard final burn neo and use it..it will save you a lot of headaches trust me. Also note that not all roms are the same with Finalburn neo and fightcade.

And note that Most are interchangeable but not all of them but not ALL roms with finalburn neo are usable with fightcade as there are updates to the roms from time to time fightcade is behind somewhat Aslo, some roms do not need to be in fightcade (f.e single player games) so that code (driver) is not in the code [I think] so you are losing out on many roms that you could be using nor. Honestly you are better off using retroarch for the roms that you want to run in/with finalburn neo (there is a core for final burn neo in retroarch) OR you can use the stand alone emulators for each system you want like I mentioned. What I am saying is you are making it difficult on yourself. Fightcade was NOT made to be used in a frontend!

Emulators / Re: Mame setup for Linux
« on: February 25, 2022, 08:21:46 PM »
Well I was trying to update the above post but it is giving me some problems posting the update not sure way...so here is an update:

Advanced mame https://www.advancemame.it/download Must be compiled for source code on linux. Based on a 0.106 version of mame roms. Note that the code was "bumped up" to mame version 0.170. i.e. it is newer code but still based on mame version 0.106)

NegaMame: http://babelsoft.net/products/negamame.htm Now honestly I can not tell you much about this as  I can not get it to run. Something about a QT5 error. I will try to actually compile it soon instead of using the pre-compiled binary and see what happens...

gui mame: http://qmc2.arcadehits.net/wordpress/ (can install from the repositories No longer maintained. You can compile the latest source if you wish ..you need to have the command line version of mame installed. Note you CAN use the CHD gui from the windows based version in WINE, but you will need a newer version of a windows MAME to use it properly!)

pfeMAME: https://sourceforge.net/projects/pfemame/files/ This is a pure gui it doesn't come with any mame at all. You choose the version of mame you want and tell it where it is. You will need a version of real mame (i.e. not a libretro core) to use this one properly as it will need to use the listxml command to build the list correctly.

Negatron: http://babelsoft.net/products/negatron.htm this is the gui for Negamame I think. Again I have not been able to try it..I'll get back to you!

General / Re: Question on video screensaver
« on: January 15, 2022, 07:13:53 PM »
yeah I always get them backwards..for some reason...I have a vertical set up that might be why...but anyhow...

I know what widescreen is..thus why I asked if there can be a widescreen overlay so the video can be sized into a normal "square" screen.
That is the aspect ratio is correct as it was made for but the "black bars" on the sides of a widescreen monitor are covered

General / Question on video screensaver
« on: January 14, 2022, 08:50:53 PM »
Is there a way to possibly display a game overlay like from the game or such in the screen saver so the screen is filled on a 9:16 10:16 monitor and the video not stretched (thus still 3:4)?

Like how you would use a overlay on retroarch when playing a game.

Maybe I am missing something?  ???
