One more thing: apparently, vanilla MAME works well with a rotated desktop, unfortunately I use GroovyMAME. Calamity, who is (one of the) programmers on it, says in an old BYOAC post that GroovyMAME doesn't work with a rotated Windows desktop. I'm using the most recent version (0.220), and it still doesn't seem to work (4:3 games are stretched to full screen in MAME (in 3:4!), and the rotate option in the TAB-settings doesn't help.

Re: all this - Groovy works with rotated desktop (I use it like this! ), but to rotate the layout on a horizontal desktop just go into attract mode config and set a key to toggle rotation.

I will add a setting for this though as it's not sticky.

Only thing I'd like to add is a gradient on the text, but I don't understand shaders at all...

Figured it out! Will take a little bit of time to apply to everything, looks awesome!

Crashes with barebone ROM lists should now be solved.

Also added some optional glamour to the wheel logo.

Only thing I'd like to add is a gradient on the text, but I don't understand shaders at all...

Aha, no Category in your ROM list. I can fix that crash. Import catver.ini as an additional file for MAME to work around it.

Are you able to run attract-console from a command prompt and get the error message?

Finally got around to smartening up Verticools. Designed on and for a vertical 15KHz 240p 4:3 CRT display, but will work anywhere - set your aspect ratio and rotation if required in the options. Will use wheel images if you have them enabled in the emulator configuration.

The below filter rules work nicely to clean out the cruft for MAME 222 as far as vertical, joystick playable games go.

Scripting / Re: Help me understand the conveyor module
« on: April 27, 2020, 09:13:09 AM »
Is there any way of having the conveyor spin infinitely when a key is held, rather than coming to a stop at the end of a list?

I rebuilt my vertical cabinet over the weekend, including updating Windows to 7 (from XP) and AttractMode to 2.2.1 (from 1.6.1).

Rather than use my existing verticools layout.nut, I used the one in the download zip. Needed to make a few tweaks (stripped out the rotation code entirely as the OS is portrait), but anything where I used the shadow trick - draw shadow then text afterwards inheriting the properties of the shadow did not work.

Code: [Select]
local slgsh=fe.add_text("[Title]",lbx+1,lby+1,lbw,ith);
slgsh.set_rgb(0,0,0);
local selgame=fe.add_text(slgsh.msg,slgsh.x-1,slgsh.y-1,slgsh.width,slgsh.height);

I ended up modifying this code to the below, which works.
Code: [Select]
local slgsh=fe.add_text("[Title]",lbx+1,lby+1,lbw,ith);
slgsh.set_rgb(0,0,0);
local selgame=fe.add_text(slgsh.msg,lbx,lby,lbw,ith);

Just wondering if something changed or if there's something weird going on with my setup.

There is a lack of layouts with small screens in mind, and i thank the creator of Cools Layout for sharing this wonderful work.

*blush*

You should thank the Hyperspin artwork and Emu-movies guys. If it wasn't for their efforts making the assets we'd all be stuck with stinking ugly lists.

I should look at my layout again now all the animation stuff is mainline, it always felt a little static.

General / Re: Does AM crash while generating its game list for anyone else?
« on: February 14, 2016, 11:33:11 AM »
It works from the command line every time, so something about the UI process versus the CLI process must be different.

I've got 16GB of RAM, and AM is 64bit. It's not using up anywhere near enough to run out of memory.

I have 4GB. You have 32000 files compared to my 18000. I can make it fail earlier by having less memory...

However - I've done what brywalker suggested and ran it in compatibility mode for Vista, and it's worked!

I am 99% sure this is down to not having enough free RAM to deal with the number of ROMs found. I know if I have something taking up a big chunk of RAM in the background it will either crash or silently fail, and seems the frontend itself takes up enough RAM when running to cause it.

I've not been able to generate a new list for a few months.

--full doesn't seem to work from commandline either.

If I use a small directory of files it works without a hitch.

Wow, excellent release :)

One tiny little issue with the grid and filter-grid layouts. When horizontal scrolling the column being scrolled off screen vanishes instead of moving off.

(And I'm now on a full Linux desktop, with only Windows on the cabinet due to the input lag issue with SDL...)

Spotted something irritating with the global filter. It applies to favourites. A good chunk of my favourites are clones. So they get filtered out by the global cloneof filter.

I've shifted cloneof back into my category filters rather than global, wondering if anyone has any better ideas? Almost want favourites to be a special case that bypasses all other filters.
