Build bot slave (server that actually does the "nightly" builds) is temporarily offline.

Internet was disconnected at my house while I was on vacation last week. AT&T says it will take a week to reconnect the service.... Thanks Uverse.

I just installed xubuntu 14.04 i386 on a virtual machine and installed the same deb package. All the videos looked fine.

Unlike the front-ends you mention as working, Attract-Mode is cross-platform. The sound system used by the framework is called OpenAL. Unfortunately it does not support ASIO.
That said, your specific case will likely never work unless SFML started using PortAudio (which apparently supports ASIO).

I'm not able to reproduce on ArchLinux.
Are you compiling from the latest repository source? If not, try that.

I get the same issue with OSX ... it would be nice if AM retained focus until after the emu had launched, but for me... I have an MAME machine built out of a beer keg, so how fussy can I be? lol

Impossible to fix or work-around under OSX. It's a limitation (or feature according to Apple) of the operating system.
