General / Attract Mode scraper and updated rom sets
« on: May 17, 2020, 03:45:43 PM »
Hello. I've updated my mame set after two years or so, and I have made a new rom list to reflect that. I have art already scraped from a previous version. I'm running the scraper now, but I'm wondering if the scraper will download artwork if has been updated? For example. some games go from not working to working the screen shot would change in the database. Does the scraper check to see if the art is changed, or does it simply check to see if art is present and then skip it? Thanks.

General / Re: AM 2.4 breaks steam window focus

saw what the issue was after I posted this of course). I usually update attract mode by copying the new EXE on top of the old one. Apparently the variable name in the .cfg has changed from the old version of AM to this one. The variable used to be called "minimum_run_time", now it is called "nb_mode_wait", so that explains why the old config does not work the way it should. Changing the variable name in the cfg fixed the issue.

edit: actually this did not fix the issue. The biggest problem game is DBFZ, which has 2 splash screens before the game is actually loaded. AM is not actually "waiting" for the amount of time specified for the game to be in focus, it seems to see the first splash screen as the game, then when it goes away to show the second splash screen, AM gains focus again instead of waiting the specified time. This makes trying to play this game impossible on AM, unless there is a way to force AM to wait like the old versions.

General / AM 2.4 breaks steam window focus
« on: July 28, 2018, 07:24:50 AM »
After updating to the new AM 2.4, it seems the "minimum_run_time" variable is broken or not working properly. As we know, steam is problematic with AM because there are usually 1-2 loading splash screens before the actual game takes over. At the very least, there is one steam window that pops up briefly that says "launching x" whenever you play a game. After that, sometimes there is even another splash loading screen (SFV and DBFZ are both like this).

In the previous versions, setting the minimum_run_time variable would wait a number of seconds before AM started looking for the game to see if it is in focus, then would being AM back into focus once that game is closed. Now, AM will launch the game, I see the steam "launching game" window, that window goes away, and AM regains control again. The game does launch but AM is taking inputs still (I hit x and it tries to launch another game), thinking it is now the window to be in focus, because the steam launch window closed. This would happen in older versions if the "minimum_run_time" variable was not changed, but now it seems to be happening again despite the setting being there. Any help with this?

General / Re: Mame 2010 menu settings not saving in Attract Mode
« on: July 05, 2018, 09:54:21 AM »
I thought I would help by giving my experience with this issue. In attract mode, you can set a hotkey to exit the emulator, which hard closes the emulator every time. The problem is, if you do this with mame, the settings you made to controls will not save. This also includes games with saved profiles (I was having a lot of trouble figuring out why my profile in NBA Hangtime would not be saved from session to session). The only way to save those settings is by exiting mame the "normal" way, whatever hotkey you have specified in Mame (usually esc). It seems that mame doesn't actually save settings until you close the mame window, but if you force close it using the hotkey in attract mode, it's as if you killed the process and mame won't save those settings.

Now, the problem with that is the problem I'm having currently. If you use a hotkey to close mame the "normal" way, attract mode will not focus back into view (this is on windows). You have to hit alt-tab and attract mode will come back immediately, but if you don't, you will sit at a frozen mame screen indefinitely. This is obviously annoying and not ideal for us with no keyboard attached to our arcade computers. So, it's kind of a rock and a hard place, either close via attract mode and not have settings save, or close by mame and not have attract mode come back in focus. Before anyone mentions resfix, I do have that installed and working. Hopefully this helps with troubleshooting, since I don't currently have a solution. There's another user with a program on this forum that runs in the background and shows a black screen in between transitions that is supposed to help, but it seems unnecessary to me.
