How to troubleshoot a theme crashing?
« on: November 14, 2018, 03:28:02 AM »
Sorry if this is a super easy question - I have been searching for an hour or so with no luck.

I have attract mode working on my build.  Windows 7, 64 bit Pro, using the 64 bit version.   Attrac-Man and some of the other basic themes work fine, but when I try to use flat-blue it just crashes.

I tried setting --loglevel -debug to no avail.

Basically, everything loads and then Attract-mode just crashes, with a windows method that says "Attract-Mode is not working".  Where do I start troubleshooting this?

many thanks

Pete ( a noob)

That's odd that attract would actually crash because of a theme.

Some general debugging things I do.
  • Set attract in windowed mode so you can see console/terminal at the same time.
  • Verify you have correct dependencies (modules) for theme.
  • Use debug plugin to reload layouts and show framerate.
  • Print to terminal a test string or variable to string to narrow down your error. If already using helpers module, there's a print function to include a line return making it easier.

i know i have this issue alot with a new theme. i do know that if the resolution isnt correct it can pose a problem.

or if your theme .nut file has an extra space in a line.

but i have found that from time to time my themes crash am. then i end up changing themes. took me along time to get some themes to work.

sorry im not much help but i have experienced this same problem.

my solution turned out to be , throw a temper tantrum while frustratingly trying to figure out ambuilder and made my own themes. havent had a crash yet.... YET... lol
we came , we saw , we lost LOTS of quarters...
