...when I can manage to save $40 for the sdclone app.

There are plenty of free apps that can copy/clone a sd card.

Windows - Win32DiskImager - https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
Mac - ApplePi-Baker - https://www.tweaking4all.com/software/macosx-software/macosx-apple-pi-baker/
Linux - console using the native "dd" command

You might want to also check out PiShrink (https://github.com/Drewsif/PiShrink) which can make your image smaller by truncating all the empty/blank space in the image then expanding the file system to fit the next sd card on first boot.

1. Using AttractMode 2.4 or newer on Window you need to use the "attract-console.exe" executable (AM older than 2.4 uses the "attract.exe" executable) to build romlists from the console
2. When using Windows you need to use the proper command line switches (i.e. -b instead of --build-romlist, -F instead of --filter, etc.)
3. To view the proper switches in Windows you can use "attract-console.exe -h" or "attract.exe -h" (depending on your version of AM)

Here's what your command would be (or at least close)
Code: [Select]
attract-console.exe -b MAME -F "Tags not_contains HIDE" -F "Year not_contains ?" -F "Manufacturer not_contains bootleg" -F "Control not_contains gambling" -F "CloneOf not_equals .*" -o MAME2

One or more filter rules can also be applied when importing or building a romlist from the command line using the "--filter " option. So for example the following command line:

Code: [Select]
attract --build-romlist mame --filter "Rotation equals 90|270"
will build a romlist that contains only the vertical games in your collection. The can be specified in exactly the same format as how filter rules are specified in Attract-Mode's attract.cfg file.

General / Re: Is there anyway you can save your scores in attract mode?
« on: November 27, 2018, 11:46:01 PM »
Other frontends have used hitotext.exe to show scores stored in MAME. It's possible in AttractMode but it would be limited to Windows installs and someone would need to write a little code (plugin/module) to make it happen. I think this plugin http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=1927.msg13403#msg13403 could be used as a starting point if you're interested.

Today, you could use RocketLauncher (Windows only) with AttractMode and it would provide this feature. You can see it here http://www.rlauncher.com/wiki/index.php?title=Pause_High_Score. Here's a link if you're interested http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=2401.msg16418#msg16418

When I use artwork type "snap", it selects the movie files within the same folder and not the static files.  How do I force it to select the static files and not the movie files?

Thanks!

AttractMode will always choose a video over an image when both are available unless the layout is written to change this default function. You can read about this in the "Artwork Selection Order" here https://github.com/mickelson/attract/blob/v2.4.0/Readme.md

The solution is to store the static snaps in a separate folder. You can then just point to the folder with the static snaps. If you want to show your static images when videos aren't available then you can put the paths to both directories in your emulator.cfg file (separated by a semicolon).

Anther solution is to modify the layout.nut file to use logic to change the default AttractMode behavior.

General / Re: Fun with raspberry pi

Just my 2 cents.

- 90%+ of heatsinks for for the Pi are trash and use stickers to attach which have zero thermal transfer
- a fan would introduce noise, and more importantly for you voltage and amperage draw on your Pi and power supply
- a Pi cost less than $40. forget about all heatsinks, fans and maybe even cases. overclock it to the max and if it dies (which it won't) buy another one with the $40 you saved on the heatsinks, fan and case.
- a Pi without a case will run cooler than one in a case. a case is really for portability and aesthetics.
- once you emulate on good hardware (which I know you have) the Pi is a nice toy but will never satisfy your expectations. it's a fun project but only if you're poor, not a serious emulator, only want really old games or need a super small footprint.
- the Pi emulation limitation is only part of the puzzle, these same limitations are placed on the AttractMode layouts

P.S. Keep in mind that any MPEG2 video decoding on the Pi is done by the CPU by default. If you buy the cheap MPEG2 license you can offload this to the GPU which will help a ton on performance and overall Pi temperatures. I doubt that most use MPEG2 videos on the Pi but it's worth pointing out.

You say you followed the Pi FAQ http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=1249.0...

1. You say "I've tried twice now installing the latest retropie, then AM as an experimental package." The  first section of Pi FAQ reads
Code: [Select]
Warning to upgraders: If you are upgrading from a version of Attract-Mode that was originally installed from the RetroPie Setup menu do not use these steps, instead upgrade using the RetroPie Setup menu like your original install. Failure to do so will result in two desperate Attract-Mode installations. This specific step is meant for people that have manually installed Attract-Mode from the command line or are installing Attract-Mode for the first time.
2. The keyboard issue you mentioned is talked about in Floob's image thread. It's an old image and I believe the fix was a timeout before launching AM.

3. The /usr/local/share/attract/layouts requires root or "sudo" access. The "pi" user doesn't have enough rights.

Go to the command line and type the following.
Code: [Select]
sudo find / -name attract

This will show you results. Next type the following for each of your results and post them.
Code: [Select]
ls -l <path_found_above>/layouts
example:
ls -l /usr/local/share/attract/layouts

Floob's image is over 2 years old! What do you mean by "updated everything"? How was "everything" updated?

You deleted the layouts from the /usr/local/share/attract/layouts folder or from the ~/.attract/layouts folder?

How did you copy your new layouts, which folded did you copy them to and what user account was used to copy them?

It sounds like you installed AttractMode from the RetroPie Setup Menu which doesn't use the default AttractMode install locations. Look in your other "attract" folder(s) for the correct location.

I just remembered seeing these a while back. I've never used them so I don't know if they will help you, but they might.

EmulationStation Gamelist Description to AttractMode Overview (keep in mind the way that the AttractMode Overview works has changes since this post was made)
http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=1990.msg13738#msg13738

552
These are available in a bunch of places. Here's one http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=1750.msg16099#msg16099.

You can also use the AttractMode builtin function to get these by setting your emulator.cfg file to use thegamesdb.net and then regenerate your romlist.

NES example
Code: [Select]
system               Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
info_source          thegamesdb.net

This information is also in the listxml and listsoftware functions of MAME/MESS but chances are your naming convention is different.

553
A couple of things:
1. AttractMode doesn't store "overview" information in the romlist. It stores and pulls this information from individual text files (located in /AttractMode/scraper/<system>/overview/<game>.txt)
2. None of the HyperSpin xml files contain "player" or "overview" information, have a look for yourself http://hyperlist.hyperspin-fe.com/. I'm not sure where you got your file but if the standard HS files don't contain the information then the import process probably isn't looking for it.

554
What specific file and emulator/system are you trying to import?

Everything you describe seems to be correct. Are you using a good 2+ amp power adapter? I have seen ffmpeg fail when compiling for no apparent reason. Since it's a new build I would try it again, it might have been a fluke. I'll also mention you can use a "-j4" flag after the "make" commands when you're compiling. This will use all 4 cores of the Pi3 and speed things along.

May I kindly suggest you mention this flag in the first post? Would have been nice to know about before waiting through the hour+ compile!  ;D

The -j4 switch isn't mentioned in the first post because it won't work on older versions of the Pi. I only mentioned it when the person posting said he was using a Pi3. The -j4 switch is also less reliable if overclocking is set too high on the Pi.
