I am not exactly sure what you mean by "redistribute your own". Yes it is written in squirrel. If you are talking about making your own layouts and such., you just post your work here on the forums under the themes sub forum. Most of us post a pic of our layout first..then "tweak" it (you know how artists are :P ) and then post a message with the layout files attached for people to download.

The program itself is distributed via git hub or you can download it from the download link.

We trade code here all the time and you can look into the layout file and see how it is done. Do you have any coding experience? (I assume so) Also to make the videos and such show even in a basic layout you have to have the video snaps screen shots ect..we don't distribute that here. That's too much hassle. Did you need help getting started? We'll help. :)

General / Re: List importing
« on: May 26, 2015, 06:26:22 AM »
I'm not sure how to import that. However the best way I would imagine for this is to just grab the games that work in fba from your MAME roms. The best way to do that escapes me at the moment.

your argument(s) is wrong. You need -cv "[romfilename]" or something like that

you need to have an understanding of how the command line works to make attract mode work.

executable mame.exe
arguments [name] (or [romfilename]) you need qoutes around your rom name if there are spaces (e.g. "mario bothers")
extention .zip;.gens;.bin;.iso (whatever)

because all attract mode does is "type the command in the command line for you" thus when you set up attractmode up it fills in the information for you that way you do not have to have a full keyboard attached. In other words all attract mode does is make it to where you can use "special" controls (e.g. arcade stick or a joypad) to type into the computer instead of typing on a keyboard or clicking a mouse every time you want to play a game.

The problem is emulators have different ways to run them from the command line. So the programmer of attract mode (as well as all other front end developers) make a "generic" start method. This is because command line (thus any program (yes even if it has a gui it still goes to the command line!)) syntax or word structure. (yes it is and language term it has nothing to do with computers) is the same no matter what program it is. The executable, the options, the files to open (if any) , the extension. So the command line sees: 'mame.exe C\:dkong.zip -no sound' which it what information needs to start. (that tells the computer to run the program "mame" and for the program mame to run (or open the file) named "dkong" (donkey kong) in the path the c drive in the folder "roms" that is a (zip)ped (compressed) file (as opposed to dkong.jpg that is a picture file) and when you start this program with this file do not play sound.

Windows is a GUI for the command line in Windows. It was built to make computers easier and more appealing for people to use because they don't want to type or because it looks ugly (and companies want money). All Attract Mode is is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for your emulators so that you don't have to see the (or use) the command line. You can "remove" the gui that comes up in windows and replace it with attract mode! Yes you CAN run a computer without a GUI!..it's just not as easy

Sorry to rant...and it is not aimed at you personally in any way. It is just here for people who are starting out on this so they can read and understand. Emulation is NOT easy and I was lost at first too. Give it time. Read, learn, read, share, and have fun. After all the work it is worth it.

I hate to sound rude..but you need to look on the MESS forums for this..this is not the place. It keeps the fourms from being muddled with "unrelated stuff".

« on: May 21, 2015, 07:35:31 PM »
I'm currently using diet-Pi os.
majorly stripped down version of raspbian.

Gonna have to look that up..

But i'm convinced now that it's an issue with Advanced mame just taking so long to start up.

A rasp pi take so long?...well yeah...I'll agree there..

Man I don't know. Is there a "mini install" for the pi like ubuntu? (no gui..you could use a lighter one then).
Can you make it show "loading...." and cover it like omega did in his layout? Might just lengthen the time.

I have emulation station on mine right now I have tried to find how to cover that up myself...I wonder...Can you shove that all to another terminal? (I did that with my start up..it comes up blank now I am going to have an intro video.)

Sorry I'm not much help :P

Hmmm...this is one of the times that you need to be there to see what is going on :(

Yes AM will work on any computer or operating system and will start any program (I've done it)

Here is what I want you to do. We need more info to fix this: The things I tell you to type are shown in quotes..DO NOT type the qoutes (i.e. "cmd" you type cmd  <- see..no quotes)

1. I want you to press and hold the windows key and then press the R key to bring up the run dialogue box.
2. Next in the pop-up box I want you to type "cmd"  then press enter
3. In that black screen type "D:\"
4. next Type "cd  D:\attracmoded151\emulation\"
5. Then type "cd  D:\attracmoded151\emulation"
6. Now type "attract.exe" AM should start.
7. Try to start a game.
8. Now exit AM (Esc then quit)
9. That stuff that prints out there from AFTER (or below) attract.exe copy that and paste it here.

That will let us see any errors that pop up. That will help us a lot in helping you.

well according to your set up you shouldn't even have a list..if what I am looking at is right.

Code: [Select]
# Generated by Attract-Mode 1.5.1#
executable           D:\attracmoded151\emulation\Fusion364
args                 "[romfilename]" -fullscreen
rompath              D:\attracmoded151\emulation\Fusion364\roms
romext               .sms;.sg;.sc;.mv;.gg;.cue;.bin;.zip
system               Sega Genesis
info_source          thegamesdb.net
artwork    flyer           $HOME/fusion/boxart
artwork    marquee
artwork    snap            $HOME/fusion/videos;$HOME/fusion/snap
artwork    wheel
[/code]
you say that your extension is a ".gen" file....but..you do not even have a "gen" extension for your rom extension

Code: [Select]
# Generated by Attract-Mode 1.5.1
#
executable           D:\attracmoded151\emulation\Fusion364.exe
args                 "[romfilename]" -fullscreen
rompath              D:\attracmoded151\emulation\Fusion364\roms
romext               .gen
system               Sega Genesis
info_source          thegamesdb.net
artwork    flyer           $HOME/fusion/boxart
artwork    marquee
artwork    snap            $HOME/fusion/videos;$HOME/fusion/snap
artwork    wheel

Copy the above as is and try it. Name it fusion.cfg

Also if gen is the only extension you have you can delete the other extensions and leave just that gens

Also you must put a ".exe" for your executable file! I fixed that as well up there

Delete your rom list first and then rebuild it using the config file I posted

Do me a favor..wipe you fusion config out totally..along with your list. (Yes erase them) just them though! We will start fresh.

oh..wait..you said any emulator...you can not run mame either?

You notice the space in that path for your roms abls?

rom:
B:\Emulator Roms\Fusion364\genesis roms
                   ^                                      ^
exe:
B:\Emulator Roms\Fusion364
                   ^
That's not always a good idea. The command line doesn't like spaces. If you must keep that type path you'll need to use "B:\Emulator Roms\Fusion364.exe" for your path - yes add the quotes! (Type that as is)

Also the example set up it for linux. You did fine by changing it but try without the spaces like omegaman has shown.

Also hermine.potter is right your executable needs to be ..Fusion364.exe Windows needs to have an extension (gotta love DOS!)
Please post any errors from the command prompt if there are any (right click then copy in the command prompt window)..that might help a lot.

General / Re: Turn off font anti-aliasing?
« on: May 18, 2015, 09:49:57 AM »
The biggest problem (IMO) I see people do is they try to do too much or be too "cute".  They try to cram every last pixel with something to make it visually "impressive".  Usually this just adds too much visual noise and overwhelms the interface.

I am not a designer by any means but I do agree with you there. I used another front end but..it dragged the system with everything they crammed into it. (the front end should not take more power to run than the emulator itself!) I found another that was "perfect". It was simple that is all I wanted just something to let the user know where they were. I used emuchrist’s themes because it let me have a "running theme" it made the front end "flow" but yet you knew where you were. Thus it looked "clean and professional" even though it was "plain".

The reason "simple" works (and you need it simple)..is because you don't know who is going to use your cab or machine and with to much going on you can overwhelm them. Besides they just want to play it anyway..once the "cool factor" wears off they don't care how it looks...just that it works.

Yeah gaming on a PC is better because it's bigger and badder because you can have the best graphics blah blah...but you'll notice that console market is "thriving". Why? Because I can just "put my game in and play". It' s simple.

So basically you are wanting to load your browser and then exit that with the esc button like you do with your emulators?. Am I right in guessing that? And you are on windows correct? I've done that before..but it was some years back with mala...let me dig...

General / AttractMode 1.5.2 debs
« on: May 14, 2015, 12:32:04 PM »
Note: version 1.60 debs are here

http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=444.0

Note: version 2.00 debs are here

http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=752.0

Here they are. AMD 64 and i386 both. Please test and use. Any problems let me know here. :)

EDIT: As of linux ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Thar) all the needed dependencies will come down making for a smooth install.
As for the new ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid) well they "broke" it. For some reason these are NOT in the repos yet. So if you want to use 15.04 here is a list of the dependences you will need...your setup might differ.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libavcodec54
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libavformat54
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libavutil52
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libgcrypt11
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libgnutls26
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/librtmp0
http://packages.ubuntu.com/ca/trusty/libswscale2

First download the arch you want amd64/i386. Then install them.

The easiest way to install these is to download them all first...then put them into a folder by themselves. (ALL OF THEM) then back up one level right click on the folder and select "open this from a terminal" (your distro may very).
once the terminal is up change to a "root" account. Now type:

Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
then you can install attractmode! :)

The other way (harder?) is to use the gui gdebipackage manager or ubuntu sofware center (depending or your distro) if you go through the gui you will get errors..I didn't write the order needed to install them (i am reading this after just installing sorry) but as long as you have the debs i posted..it might error and tell you need a different one installed first..just install the one it is complaining about first. you'll eventually get it installed..after they are all installed attractmode should install without problem.

if you need further assistance pm me and I will try to help you.
