[video] mame game icons - full set preview
« on: December 27, 2016, 02:41:27 AM »
UPDATE: Video with full set here.

---------------------

For the FLAT BLUE theme I've started to test game icons.

There is a set of game icons created by MAMu_ and update by PROGETTO
MAMu set: http://icons.mameworld.info
PROGETTO update: http://www.progettosnaps.net/icons/

Below is a screenshot of a new game icons that I've used with FLAT BLUE theme
On the left - menu icons created automatically from game snaps. On the right - actual game icons (created by MAMu).

All icons are in low res (32x32px) and this looks too blurry and pixelated on hi-res screens. But after applying a set of transformations/overlays/filters in Photoshop it starts to look good enough (or not?).

What do you think? Do you like it?

---

It's done "by hand" for these 2 icons, but I'm sure I can script a set of commands/transformations in Photoshop to get similar effect and batch convert all 10k+ icons.

You can see hi-res version here.

This is pretty nice looking, especially once you modified them :) But those are 32x32, meant primarily for the MameUIs - for your particular look you might want something bigger. I wonder if you could use the slice tool to automatically divide snaps into slices and pick the best (larger slice) for an "icon". It may take some work to find the best slice settings before you scripted it in PS.

Here's an example with sf2:

Yes, I know that it's for MameUI and was originally displayed really small. But it's the only existing icon set that I'm aware of.
Even if some of them are not that great - MAMu put A LOT of work into that.

As for non-automated approach, It's "It may take some work" I'm worried about. :D

Even with 1 icon under a minute (unrealistic) - all 10k icons would take more than 160hrs. It's like working 9 to 5 for about a month :D
I know 10k is maybe an overkill, but even if you narrow it down to 3k it's still a lot of work.
That's why I'm aiming for more automated approach.

And regardless of that MAMu icons - for use with FLAT BLUE - anyone can simply copy snap folder (to let's say "icon" folder) and manually make square crop of the game snap to customise icon look. Especially if you have a well-curated small rom set.

oh, I agree..  you don't want to be manually doing 10k+ :) But if you find a decent setting for slice in PS, you can do at as a script which would save a lot of time - depending on how the rest of those icons look though, those will probably look good enough with the filters you have on there  ;D

This is 5x an 10x blow up from original 32px
I have to work a little bit more on matching scanlines with pixels edge

Use existing icon set for low res crt. Supply script to users to make them look better on high res LCD if they wish. Easy and done. Use your time and awesome skills somewhere more important than reinventing something already existing.

It's done by hand - no recorded action yet.

"scanline" opacity mask over that three images
-----
blurred image (motion blur horizontal)
blurred image (gaussian)
normal (upscaled) image
-----
dark background

You don't have to have FB account - just click [not now] on that white login window - and you can see the video.

Always always always use "Nearest Neighbor" when scaling game sprites up..  My eyes bleed when people dont.

I don't know if you are talking about video or the one with scanline effect.
But all the icons I've used in video ARE enlarged using NEAREST NEIGHBOUR.

---

But the problem with pixel art is that shouldn't be enlarged at all - yet we have to deal with the source material at hand and that most of us are "doomed" to view this on hi-res screens rather than CRTs.
