Title: GAMERS SYSTEM HD v4.1 (JukeBox, eCarddass, Video Game Frontend)
Post by: kent79 on March 01, 2021, 04:08:25 AM
GAMERS SYSTEM dosen't only retro video game frontend. It is multiple retro entertainment systems inluding JukeBox, eCarddass and FrontEnd. All items is my favourite in young age.  It brought back many of pleasant memories. So, I would like to share it to all.

The download package dosen't contain any Music Videos, Roms, Cards, Background Music & HD artworks. You need to collect its by yourself.

Hope you enjoy the system and give me advise. Thanks  :)

I like this theme a lot, very nice usage of effects in both the system selections screen as well as the game select screen. I've downloaded the (latest?) layout from your dropbox in the OP. There are a couple of things I would really like to know how you have achieved it:

1) the black text outline on the gametitles. I have similar functionality in the theme I'm working on but it is based on a shader. I dont see any shaders in your code, how did you create the effect?

2) the pulsing outline on the game titlles. I'm guessing it uses the same technique as the outline code but adds an animation somewhere?

PS. are you on discord as well?

Yes, There is no any special skills, just be a trickly.

The magic is  :P

1. Great a new surface and then add game titlles in there
Code: [Select]
local surface_bgText = fe.add_surface( 1920, 1080 );

2. Add animation for game titlles surface
Code: [Select]
animation.add( PropertyAnimation(surface_bgText,   {when = Transition.StartLayout, property = "color", start = { red = 0, green = 0, blue = 255 }, end = { red = 3, green = 200, blue = 255 }, time = 300, delay = 100, pulse=true }));

The reason is layout design. You only exit the theme on menu's exit banner.

If you really want to cancel it, you may edit layout.nut file as below

Code: [Select]
//case "back":
// fe.signal( "layout_options" );
// return true;

Year of 2022 is coming. We would like to update system to  v2.0. There is a big change of layout. The favourite list can be shown on same screen finally. You can select favourite items in easy way now. Please make sure replace "GAMERS_DEFAULT" & "screensaver" folder and update attract cfg setting

Code: [Select]
display MAME
layout               GAMERS_DEFAULT
romlist              MAME
in_cycle             yes
in_menu              yes
filter               All
filter               Favourites
rule                 Favourite equals 1

Enjoy!  ;)

New default theme features:
- Easy navigate items by grid layout
- support displaying favourite filter
- background color can be customised by user
- game name can support displaying English, Janpanese, Chinese

*** Update ***

Well I have downloaded it. A confusing mess that does not work well.

1) Sort out your file system before zipping, it needs to be more plug and play
2) Low quality graphics for some of them
3) No sound on some videos
4) Low quality videos on most
5) The menu system needs far too much work to produce graphics at a vertical level, horizontal is always better. I do not want to do a lot of graphic work or the end user does not want to keep doing graphics
6) The card system thing looked good, but did not work for me
7) The default theme never even worked, no graphics to view

It took me less time to delete it, than it did for me to download and try it.

It honestly looks a lot better in the screen shots, than it did in real life. I honestly had high hopes that I would use this, but sadly that is not the case.

Sorry for being blunt, but you need honest feedback.

*** Update Over ***

I am just downloading this now, and I will give you 100% honest feedback on what I see.

However, to start the feedback before it has even downloaded.

1) You have a lot of Japanese Manga/Anime stuff going on in the first few screenshots, that looks amazing fantastic.
1a) However, in later screen shots that seems to have gone and replaced with just a boring bland Western view.

You really need to keep the Japanese, Manga, Anime theme going all through the skin. It really catches the eye and makes it stand out.

The whole strength of what I have seen is that Japanese look. It makes it stand out from the rest.

Just to congratulate you though for creating a skin, as this does not look easy to do so, it is a shame, that the front end did not have a better skinning method.

Regards

Mark

Mark

First, thank you for your advise. I would like to reply you one by one

1) Sort out your file system before zipping, it needs to be more plug and play
-> I know there is still some complicated for setup. Actually, version 2.0 is simplified than 1.0.

2) Low quality graphics for some of them
-> The optimize resolution is 1920 x 1080. If you are using 2K or 4k monitor, the quality will be drop

3) No sound on some videos
-> which one? It should be all ok

4) Low quality videos on most
-> same with question 2, you may be using 4k monitor

5) The menu system needs far too much work to produce graphics at a vertical level, horizontal is always better. I do not want to do a lot of graphic work or the end user does not want to keep doing graphics
-> we have prepare over 40 systems graphics, end user only change name accroding their system. Sorry, I haven't time to prepare all in here.

6) The card system thing looked good, but did not work for me
-> The card system is no any cards contain, you need to collect by yourself. You may see the setup guide first.

7) The default theme never even worked, no graphics to view
All artworks also need to collect by yourself. You may see the setup guide first.

The custom graphics that I mean, is when I add a custom collection, so as an example I created a Metal Slug collection, I then have to do a banner for that, and any other collections that I make.

You have also only done so many systems, so for example if I wanted Playstation 5 (example) as an emulator, then I have to produce custom graphics for that and any other systems that you have not done.

Also the missing graphics are the theme graphics that are missing, not my game graphics, even though they never showed up, but I would potentially have to go in and add graphics to them such as system logo's manufacters etc.

Gamers menu works, Gamers default, I am not getting any artwork hopefully my screen shot will upload

Regards

Mark

SCREENSHOT REMOVED AS SKIN CREATOR HAS SEEN IT, ALSO TOO LARGE.

Mark

Thank you for reply. First, accroding to your screenshot, your monitor really is 4k monitor, so it proves why you said the image qulaity is low.

Second, the layout is missing games artwork, pleae make sure emulator cfg setting like as below.

Code: [Select]
artwork    flyer           ..\am\emu\FC\flyer
artwork    wheel          ..\am\emu\FC\wheel
artwork    hdart           ..\am\emu\FC\hdart
artwork    snap             ..\am\emu\FC\snap;..\am\emu\FC\video

Thrid, it is so strange for missing game information like as title. I don't know is it related of resolution issue. Since I haven't 4k monitor, so I can't for doing testing. You may try to change your resolution to 1920 x 1080 for making test. Or do you have any error log for opening the theme? Thanks.

I will look into it for you, it is actually a 43 inch 4K TV that I am using as a monitor.

I am just doing another installation of AM as I am still playing with it, but this is my final set up, as I still need to learn a bit more, but I have more knowledge than I did a few days ago.

The other two themes work fine, it is just the default one that does not work.

I shall try the above anyway. Thanks :)

As I had some spare time, I looked at gamers default again, and I turned down the resolution to 1920 x 1080 and still nothing showing, I had a snap in the top right, but no menu artwork etc.

I also checked through the video snaps, and they all have sound, so I am not sure what happened before, maybe I had the sound muted or something.

I had a quick look through the nut file, but I was not going to go through the whole thing, too tired for that :)

I would have thought that the basic graphics would have shown, such as the menu bar or something that is hard coded, but nothing apart from that video snap.

Hopefully, you make it more user friendly, so it is just plug and play, drag and drop and bang ready to play.

Congrats though, I have seen a few of your themes now and they are quality.

Mark

I have double checked the code & files. All is fine.

What is your build version of AM? is it the latest version 2.6.1? I suspect you are using incompatibility version AM.

I recommend you try to donwload the latest version of AM in another PC for testing again. Thanks

I am on v2.6.1, AM is portable as far as I am aware, so you can have more than one set up.

I won't be testing on another PC, as my other PC's are for difference purposes such as Jukebox, Cinema, Office etc

This is my arcade PC, so if something does not work on here, then I am not worried about if it works on other PC's.

Hopefully it works for other people, but it is not an urgent matter for me, I was just browsing and testing new things.

I would not use the skin on my set up anyway, but it was meant for me to learn more about different skins.

I think I know why it is not working, but now I need to go through your code, as I know you have messed up somewhere, you are calling for artwork which is not even there from what I can see.

The artwork that is in the folder is sitting there, not doing anything. You would be better off having a directory called

Artwork and then putting your art work in there and then use add.image

I have only been skinning since yesterday, but come on lol

Ok I have had more time to play around. Firstly attract-console for me does not produce an error list, it is the main attract.exe that brings up last run text files, I found this while working on my skin. Which is why I never had time to mess around.

However, I will post the full log

Got it. It is not related of coding or AM version issue.

Please make sure your attarct.cfg file like as below format for each system. You can only setup 2 filters All & Favourites

Code: [Select]
display MAME
layout               GAMERS_DEFAULT
romlist              MAME
in_cycle             yes
in_menu              yes
filter               All
filter               Favourites
rule                 Favourite equals 1

Ok I have it running now, I swear I was trying it on different systems yesterday. I only have three set up so far. So it should have worked.

A nice, simple, clean theme, the graphics look to be of high quality. Sadly not a theme for me after all this, it is just too basic for my needs and wants lol

I have Arcade cabinets, well I will once I have built one and repaired the other, so you need a theme that packs a punch. I would struggle even to using this on my cinema PC.

A nice theme for a raspberry pi something which is not going to be heavy hitting on the processing power.

I am looking forward to trying your new theme though, the one with the arcade cabinet screen. HD Stadium I think that it is called.

However, your themes HATE me. I have just tried SMP and sadly that does not work for me, I tried on the same systems as before, but nothing.

I only have MAME, Atomiswave and Metal Slug Collection set up at the moment. I wanted to start doing set up guides for people, people like me that are new to the front end, as not a lot of videos on Youtube for AM. I am lucky enough to be able to get most things set up, and find out how they work, but some people might struggle, as this is not 100% an easy front end to use, but so far it seems fantastic on what it is capable of doing.

What I like and LOVE about your skin demo's is that you have the whole Japanese, Manga, Anime stuff going on.

Once you get the skins and try them out yourself, it is where is all the Japan stuff gone, the manga, the anime?

You really need to create a skin that contains all of this as that would look fantastic.

What caught my eye and got me to try Attract Mode was Nesica theme and Sega Pres, I was going for the whole Japanese gaming machine.

If you made a Manga, Anima, Japan theme it would be a killer

Looking excellent, the only thing missing now is having an overview as you seem to have everything else such as manufacture, year etc etc. I am not a massive fan of overview as I just want to play the game, but some people do like the over views. The text underneath the snap/video is the only place where you can have it.

I shall give this a try on my dummy build.

I dont find in anywhere eCarddass??? this is a emulator? where i found the cards???????  :o

You need to read from the start on threads, however, this is a pretty hard one for newbies to set up. This is for the ecards from page 1

Setup Guide III (eCarddass)

1. attract cfg file setup sample
Code: [Select]
display   CARDDASS
   layout               GAMERS_CARDDASS
   romlist              CARDDASS
   in_cycle             yes
   in_menu              yes
   filter               All
   filter               Favourites
      rule                 Favourite equals 1

2. Emulators cfg file setup sample
Code: [Select]
artwork    flyer           ..\am\emu\CARDDASS\flyer
artwork    flyerhv         ..\am\emu\CARDDASS\flyerHori;..\am\emu\CARDDASS\flyerVert
artwork    flyerhvs        ..\am\emu\CARDDASS\flyerHori;..\am\emu\CARDDASS\flyerVert

3. Handle of Cards
a. Put all cards to ..\CARDDASS\flyer
b. Copy all Vertical cards to ..\CARDDASS\flyerVert
c. Copy all Horizontal cards to ..\CARDDASS\flyerHori , then using photo batch tool to rotation all cards to +90 degree, it means let Horizontal cards to Vertical.

4. Setup background music for each system
You may put mp3 background music in ..\layouts\GAMERS_DEFAULT\bgMusic folder and the file name is same as each system name.

5. Disable Confirm Favourites
Tab-> General-> Confirm Favourites-> No

6. Apply CARDDASS Display
Tab-> Displays-> [SYSTEM]-> Layout-> Select "GAMERS_CARDDASS" Layout

7. Setup key to open Carddass Station
Tab-> Displays-> CARDDASS-> Layout-> Layout Options-> set Controls key to open carddass station

8. Setup Screen Saver
Tab-> Displays-> CARDDASS-> Layout-> Layout Options-> set Screen Saver timeout value as you like

Try the internet archive

I did do a search and there were some listings for cardass, I also done a google search and it is a Japanese company where you purchase these packs from.

Yes it looks good in the demo, but pretty much unless you are really into that kind of thing, then to me it is like having toilet paper appear on your monitor, a waste of time as you can't wipe your backside with it.

I have a sneaky feeling that Kent might be from Japan, or if not has a love of Manga and Anime from a lot of his designs.

However, the card system can be used or ignored really, I don't think that it is crucial to how the skin operates.

I would still give it a go, if it is your kind of skin, as I say you do not need to use the cardass part of it, that can be removed. You are still left with a modern, gorgeous looking front end.

Yes it has a learning curve on how to set it up, it does not come out the box like it does on the video, but once you have it reasonably set up then it does look attractive.

I would call this lunchbox but on steroids as it reminds me a lot of the free front end skin of lunchbox but in a more modern way and much more colourful. I am potentially going to use this on my cinema PC at some point in the future, with just the best games on every system. However, for me on an arcade cabinet it does not make me feel like I am at an arcade, but overall the skin is beautiful, and well developed.

Mark
