General / Started with Retropie/Emulation station....

Hi, as the title suggests, I started trying to set up my custom build with RetroPie/EmulationStation, but the interface is so awful, I've not yet managed to get a successful setup.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to have a menu of games that I can scroll through with a simple "Up/Down" on the joystick, and one button click to start the game (usually MAME). Then from there, set up my keys through the MAME config menu, with an option to exit the game with either a specific button, or a two-button combination (like [Player 1] and [Player 2] held together.
Is this something that I can do through AttactMode?
