Start + Select does not exit game in Attract Mode

Been using Emulation Station for a year or so and just decided to experiement with Attract Mode.  I'm not able to exit MAME games with Start + Select.  All other systems work and Start + Select exits MAME in Emulation Station just fine.  I'm sure it's a simple fix but I have not been able to figure it out.  Thanks!

on my test-system AM + mame works und exits perfectly:

Win7 x64
AM 2.2.1
mame 0.184 (no nag screens)
PS3 controller (dualshock3 ; sixaxis)
