Title: OlRoom Theme Released (Full theme on 2nd page) (Thanks for Ptiwee for codding)
Post by: Spinelli on August 25, 2016, 07:54:43 AM
I saw that has a lot of very talented people here, making wonderful themes.
I do not have time or talent for codding, but I like a theme available for mGalaxy and it would be great to be something like this theme on Attractive Mode, with some adjustments, such as the insertion of the Wheel, which is, in my opinion, the most practical way to select games with arcade control.

It would be something like this:(https://s11.postimg.org/dfyi6fpxv/theme_mockup.jpg)

ps: this is just a mockup, the wheel image is just figurative and not represent the true wheel of the game on image.
pps: Maybe, perhaps in place of the logo on the wheel, the box art or game cartridge would be cool too.

Hello Spinelli,

I made this layout, I don't have the graphics for the background but I hope there is enough for you to play with and improve it.
If you have any questions let me know :)

Hi PtiWii,

I tried to edit some code (I'm very noob in this aspect), and I adjusted some things, but others I did not know how to do.
If it is not asking too much, you could fix it in the code to get in the way represented in the picture below?

(https://s3.postimg.org/6kedyq80j/example_to_fix.jpg)

Also I have attached the code and the background to mark the location and the size of things.

Thanks!

After reading your post, I was inspired to come up with something similar to what you mentioned :) Recently, with the "Concept" layout, I made some changes and added in my own images, some of which were simple ones I created (and the rest found with Google) and put together this layout. The design is pretty basic and I may remove or shrink the game logos in the future, or possibly add some elements to the background?

Wow, very nice! In comparison, this theme makes hyperspin themes look totally boring and plain. Well done with the artwork too!

I agree these images look really great, would love to try also curious how many backgrounds you have created.is it just one generic and the poster art loaded from flyer along with console loaded from clogo or are they static?

For those who would like to use and test this, here follow the pack with the themes for: Master System, Mega Drive, Sega 32X, NES, Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64.

The posters are static for this theme because I like to keep a clear visual identity with each theme and know exactly which system is selected, even if other elements like the console and specific action figures are present. The only thing dynamic is the snap (videos) and the boxarts.

All of the themes seem to be working great. Thanks for releasing them, this is what I've been looking for. Do you plan on releasing anymore systems like gamecube,wii,ps1,ps2, and dreamcast? Thanks once again.

Excellent :o I have only tried the SNES layout but look forward to trying the others. Just a thought, it would be super cool if the box art was added and scanlines to the T.V.

Here is the site where I download my boxarts.

http://www.theoldcomputer.com/game-box-art-covers/

For Snes, Mega Drive, Master System and Sega 32x I used the 3D Box Art.
For N64 and NES I used the 2D ones, with a "fake box" embeed in the theme.

The Scanlines in TV would be a great implementation. But, like I said, I'm a newbie in code.. Im just a designer :)
Maybe Ptiwee or other talented guy can edit the code to add a scanline layer in front of the TV.

:)

Us real genesis fans know that's not the REAL Sega Genesis in that first picture. ;D

Wow this theme looks pretty awesome!

I have a couple questions....would v0.4 be the ideal Attract Mode for me to install on my Raspberry Pi 3?

I am currently on the official latest EmulationStation and was curious and tempted to redo my whole setup.

Also curious if these themes can be applied to individual systems....for instance can I use what you posted for the consoles and something like the Nevato theme for arcade?

Would you ever make a Sega CD version of this theme and other consoles that are supported like the TG16? Possible to fix the Snes controllers to match the NTSC and fix the Genesis as someone else mentioned?

Last thing....if possible it would be awesome to release the files for us to add our own posters etc...example ---> Add a Castlevania poster on the wall in the NES room? Thanks for any help in
advance!!!!

Great job and thank you for sharing!

I am off to try this all now....(=

Yes, sure! :) I use this theme for my console emulators and a custom nevato (edited by me) for Arcade ones!

Here's what I came up with. It's a somewhat simpler version of your original theme with some elements changed, the most obvious one being the wheels-menu was changed to a text-menu, mostly because I don't like searching for 'matching' wheel images especially for the less popular systems :) Also, I found a way to fill up the tv screen, and now use fades for the box art and videos. Still work a progress but thank you again for the help and inspiration!  :D

Can you share the code for "fill up the tv screen" ?

Post by: bundangdon on September 03, 2016, 07:51:16 PM

Sure! But it's not really anything special in the code and is more of a photoshop 'trick'. I learned this idea a few years ago while making a theme for hyperspin. What I did is, copied the screen of the tv, pasted it to a new file, and finally used photoshop's "magic eraser tool" to remove the screen from the tv. Then, in the code, I programmed it to where the tvscreen.png will be placed behind the video (as a layer). Here's the code and media used in my version of OlRoom :)

I have the NES, Master, Mega, N64, 32x and SNES ones that were created.
How about 2600, tg-16, or maybe some handhelds?

Yeah,

just delete or put "//" (without commas) before those lines in layout.nut file.

// Title
local title = fe.add_text("[Title]", flw*0, flh*0.89, flw*0.4, flh*0.1);
title.align = Align.Left;

title.set_rgb(255, 255, 255);

// Playtime
local playtime = fe.add_text("Playtime : [PlayedTime]", flw*0.31, flh*0.89, flw*0.4, flh*0.1);
playtime.align = Align.Right;
playtime.charsize = 40;
playtime.set_rgb(255, 255, 255);

local conveyor_bg = fe.add_text("", flw*0.73, flh*0, flw*0.28, flh*1);
conveyor_bg.set_bg_rgb(0,0,0);
conveyor_bg.bg_alpha = 220;

I work on various projects all the time and will be sharing. Here are some screenshots of my twist on OlRoom theme by Spinelli! For somethings I left the same and added shadows, for others, I did things completely different.

These look fantastic! :) Thanks for all your hard work.

I want to point out though that the controllers for the neogeo aes are incorrect. The console is the aes (original cart based) but the controller pads are for the neogeo CD system. The aes came with a four button "arcade" stick. I'm not complaining is still looks awesome :)

Any chance you might make a sega/mega CD, a turbografx-16 CD or a play station (psx)?

EDIT: looks like cobra83 has that covered.

thanks for pointing that out! yea i might change and swap that out for the arcade sticks. I have a mega cd one done i think, have to check. as far of turbografx cd and playstation, yes i will. pc engine and cd too. i want to make a sega mark III theme but can find a high quality pic of the system like the others i used. the only HQ ones i've seen were tilted to the side....and that's not working for this theme. thanks! i will post the themes when i finish polishing a few things.

Hello everyone.

I modified the psd files that were posted and went ahead and made my own custom rooms. So far I have made NES, PS1, Sega CD, TG-16 & TG-16 CD.

I have been using them on my Pi 3 and am pleased how they came out. I plan on possibly swapping out the tv / desk and maybe some other modifications but so far I enjoy them. Here are some screenshots. Please let me know what you think. I will also be sharing with those who may be interested in using them in the future. Thanks!

3DO (can the pi even do that??)

Atari 2600, 5200 and 7800

Neo-Geo CD (not sure the pi can do that..maybe with final burn alpha?)

intellivision

colecovision

I think that would cover most of the popular retro systems (that can be easily emulated anyway).

I will release the ones I made here if anyone is interested in using them. Right now I have been trying to fix other issues / clean up the library with proper art etc, alter some of the nut files to better suit the box area etc.... and have taken a break at the moment from the themes. I will be sure to share them with you all though! (=

I love this theme!

I did want to see if anyone is experiencing some slowdown/lag in changing games though. I see it in NES and MegaDrive - seems like it might have to do with art loading and displaying. Anyone else seeing something similar?

I am using a stock Pi3.

Can you add a OlRoom version of N64, Dreamcast and somehow GameBoy Color/Advanced?

And a display menu (console/system selection) theme would be really nice, this forum needs more menu display themes.

How do you change the wheel to text only,I don't use wheel art..or can you make thewheel straight like this..

(http://www.mameworld.info/3darcade/skins/vec_cyl.jpg)

I might convert some of the skins from 3D Arcade..:)(this one is good if you can play Vectrex on the PI)

This is what the layout looks like on mine,I use composite.

When I designed it, I counted on PtiWee's help for the code, but I always left it open to be a collaborative theme.

I am very happy that you guys have enjoyed and keep improving the theme!

Request:

These look amazing. I'd like something comparable for portrait mode overlays, but if I use these I don't have enough vertical image to make them look correct...

I'm using this now http://i.imgur.com/mYnBoDk.png  but there is so much more potential for the space.

1024x1638 would be ideal....

Thanks for posting the OlRoom PSD, I should be able to come up with something using the Gimp with that as a starting point...if no one else beats me to it.

Here is my first attempt using the source provided here:

There's one for Megadrive (the non us version of genesis). I made one for the regular Genesis. I can modify it to work with the 16:9 ratio layout. Same with the Atari 2600 I made for 4:3

Thanx to the release of the PSD from Spinelli I have been tinkering with existing themes. Some are just minor changes but the larger Sony Wega is the main update. I believe it was RetroKenesis that used a Wega as well, but I wanted to go a bit bigger. On some themes I added a couple little objects (statues, cartridges). The Atari 2600 was unmodified but added to the package, this was created by Nismo, excellent work!

I am pretty happy with the result. My Photoshop skills are amatuer at best, so things like reflections and shadows are iffy. Not on par with Spinelli by any means.

Another update to some themes, this time handheld. This are modifications along with new handhelds from modjo from this thread,
http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=1336.0 (http://forum.attractmode.org/index.php?topic=1336.0)

He had created and released a Game Gear and Gameboy theme inspired by the Olroom themes but for handhelds. Excellent work from modjo.
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/razin7x/th_20170205_000601_0_zpsvbnps8t5.png) (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/razin7x/media/20170205_000601_0_zpsvbnps8t5.png.html)(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/razin7x/th_20170205_000501_0_zpspa8mbf5k.png) (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/razin7x/media/20170205_000501_0_zpspa8mbf5k.png.html)

I wanted to add some more using this theme. So now we have in total, Game Gear and Gameboy (in the thread above), along with my additions of Atari Lynx,
Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Color and Neo Geo Pocket Color.

3DO and Jaguar are now up. Note: These were not screen capped live, so the box art is not in the sample pics, but will appear to the lower right of the TV like the other themes.

The Amiga one pleases my eyes so greatly  :o
I like the others too alot, handhelds being actually held by a hand. Nice.
But I wish there was some way to find a way around those differing angles that makes the cases, controllers and consoles really stand out as not being on the table/bench surface. But please do not take it as dislike or complaint, I still like them and want to use them.

Yes. I'll take a look at them today. Can't promise I'll get anywhere, but I know how to edit the .nut files and make themes.

If anyone else wants to handle that effort, let me know. Otherwise, I'll see if I can fit it in later today.

I looked in the nut file for the theme and was able to edit it pretty readily.  I have obviously customized these to my own taste (gradient overlay sidebar graphic, etc) but I'm going to share the nut files I've made with the community as I complete them.  Credit to Spinelli for the theme, Ptiwee for the original code and Nismo for the images that I used...

The first two I have complete are The GBA and GBC.

Here's the GameBoy version.  I have prepared a GameGear version as well; however, the GameGear art available from all my sources is a different version from what Nismo included in his image.  I have PMed him and asked for an image without the blank box art.  If he grants my request, I will post a layout for the GameGear at that time.

Thanks!

Here's the last one I'm doing unless I hear back from Nismo about getting art without the box images.  For some reason the transparent overlays look TERRIBLE in this screenshot, but I promise they don't look like that in the real theme.  Must be something about how attractmode takes screen shots.

Very nice! I really like the video-effect going on behind the window. Also, I was wondering, how were you able to make the layouts fade between the main menu and the systems menu? I haven't seen any information on this so far

A nice (more) modern design, and I really like the bedroom window in your version of this theme. However, some of the PlayStation seems to be floating in the air and I would make the television a little bigger too ;D

Yeah will fix floating stuff, thats minor. As for tv i really dont want to change it, when snap is playing it feels good. And if i were to increase it it would really be out of proportions with rest of the room.

I did some changes ,not yet finished, but posters will not be fixed, meaning that your game box art will be behind glass showing and will even have lights effects. But it will be only be possible in AM due to scripting available other front ends cant utilize that. In preliminary test, i found that only 2D boxart would look good, 3d not so much

I added suport for CRT filters using the shader module, i know it's no big deal but i'd share it if anyone is interested.
Besides that i pretty much kept the original theme (i made a custom background that looks like my childhood home and TV but i doubt anyone wants that).

I'm interested in making some sort of ambience lightning based on the snap. Anyone did something like that? I suppose i would make a mask for the background, and then use a very blurred version of the video to shed some light and color. With "add" blending if possible. I don't really know what im talking about, i could do it on photoshop but is it doable on a .nut file?
Title: Re: OlRoom Theme
Post by: placebo_yue on July 14, 2019, 10:24:09 PM
i went ahead and made my custom PSX theme
https://www.mediafire.com/file/964et8apmle92st/OlRoom_PSX.zip/file

Check out what i added:
All those can be disabled on the layout options.

To use this glow thing you'll have to modify the bloomMultipass shader on your shader module, instructions are on the layout.nut file, right on top.
If you know how, make a parameter that can be set on the layout instead. I tried making some sort of "alphaValue" parameter to avoid modifying the actual shader (beyond creating the variable/parameter, duh) but i could not. I don't really get shaders so i did my best.

Of course feel free to replace my ugly enviroment with whatever you want, it's just editing the background you already have same way i did with mine. I kept the screen in the same spot as the original theme (based this on the MegaDrive one) so no coding required for replacing.
