What part of the picture makes you think that? I didn't find a screenshot of parodius' gameplay that has that exact status bar at the bottom, but the PC Engine version of Gradius does:

You are right!
Here the link of Parodius, the bottom bar is the same

It's similar, but not the same. Gradius has 6 slots, Parodius has 7, and the ship icon + the score line aren't there in Parodius.
edit: I wrote the above post before you edited yours. ;)

do you guys know of any other games similar to these, cheers

Both are likely from PC-Engine (TurboGrafx-16) Library:
1. Gradius (Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWDXdf5TuSY)
2. Blazing Lazers (Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OquO7XKHDT4)

Gradius has dozens of ports/ sequels/ homebrews. There is an extensive shoot 'em up library in PC-Engine but I would recommend that you go through MAME first as most of the better titles originated from arcades.
A compilation video series of shooters (with titles) on MAME is here > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7k7TBf7DHc

awesome video links cheers gives me a few options

As rand0m said, the PC Engine (Turbografx-16 in the USA) is one of the best consoles for shooters from the 8-16 bit era. One of my favourites and exclusive to the PC Engine is Air Zonk (jap.PC Denjin Punkic Cyborg). It has funny graphics and gameplay, and really good music.

Mind that the english version is slightly censored. It lacks some content considered inappropriate for the western/american market, namely poop bombs with sunglasses, and a milk gun that resembles a pair of breasts. ;D See https://tcrf.net/Air_Zonk (https://tcrf.net/Air_Zonk) for the details.

As a great fan of shoot em ups I really loved the PC Engine back then, even if I never owned one. I remember Coryoon as one of the cutest shooters out there :D
As far as arcade shooters are concerned, don't miss V-Five also known as Grind Stormer, a very clever weapon system and cool graphics.

Ah, it's from Naxat Software. The creators of the best console pinball games, Alien Crush, Devil's Crush (jap. Devil Crash), and Jaki Crush.
As for more smups, the Neo Geo also had quite a few very good ones:

Also a nice place to identify and check mame games is this: https://pip.cat/mame/
It's not updated to the latest MAME but you can filter easily by category and look through screenshots...

Its amazing how they jumped from platform to shoot 'em up (Bonk is the main series primarily platform). I am currently working on PC-98 and it too contains some great shoot 'em ups. Once I have worked through all the systems (some 50% remaining) I'll make sure to create videos containing the best each system has to offer and share it here.

That would be great! :D
