Title: translators
Post by: akafox on August 09, 2015, 09:50:11 PM
would anybody be interested in helping to add other languages to attract mode?

Ray can that be done without much sweat tears and beer? (would you mind?)

@checkist & Onkel_Tom
Please provide your translated language files. This would be very nice and helpfully for attract-community. Thank you.

this interest is great!  translations (and any other contributions!) are very welcome.

The spanish translation is a good model for what would be needed, just replace the spanish parts:  https://github.com/mickelson/attract/blob/master/config/language/es.msg

character encoding needs to be utf-8

OK, thanks.
I already started my German translation based on the French one but got stuck since some lines had no English equivalent and my french is somehow rusted ;-)
So I re-start on the Spanish

Well it took much longer than I expected... but here's translation for Korean/Japanese languages.

It should be noted that the default font (arial) for Attract-Mode cannot display Korean/Japanese languages...

I don't know for linux, but for windows, use following fonts:

Korean fonts - malgun (Malgun Gothic)
  *. Included in Windows Vista / 7 / 8
*. Windows XP users can download from following : (Official)
     http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10490

Japanese fonts - Meiryo (Doesn't work with Attract-Mode, unfortunately)
  *. Also included in Windows Vista / 7 / 8
*. Windows XP users can download from following : (Official)
     http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10550
*. Unlike malgun, which is .ttf, this is .ttc. And unfortunately, .ttc is not supported by AM (yet)

All languages - arialuni (Arial Unicode MS)
*. Contains (almost) all Unicode characters
*. Unfortunately, it's not free. It's part of MS Office

So to summarize:

1. Windows + Office Users
Set AM's font to arialuni. You can use either Korean/Japanese without any problems

2. Windows Vista / 7 / 8 Users - Korean language
Set AM's font to malgun.

3. Windows XP - Korean language
Download malgun from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10490
Then set AM's font to malgun

4. Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8 Users - Japanese language
We're doomed. What should we do?
(Perhaps http://www.wazu.jp/gallery/Fonts_Japanese.html can be of help...)

Hello,

I finished the translation in French and he only misses the screensaver menu.
Indeed, I have not found the corresponding strings to translate.

Hi, attached is the German translation.
However, I think there could be some optimizations done in general (no criticism intended, just some thoughts).
First of all, it is somehow confusing that the en.msg contains less entries (lines) than the originally available translations and I had to take a translated file (e,g, es.msg) as basis for my work. For some entries I had to cross-check with the en.msg so 3 files open in parallel which was not really comfortable.

It would be really great to have one "source" file with all the entries as a basis, even if it would mean the in the en.msg you had some "silly" mappings like
Exit;Exit
but with the benefit that we all knew exactly what to translate.

Furthermore, there seem to be some hard-coded menu entries where I could not find an equivalent in the file, especially in the Plug-in section, see attached screenshots.

Cheers, Thomas

Thanks everyone for this!  I've got the japanese, korean, german and updated french translations in to the development branch now.  I also made a bit of a change to the program to try to get reasonable default fonts for japanese and korean, hopefully it works out for people with the next version.

I'll try to move towards the source file idea Onkel_Tom so there is an easy to use template to make future translations easier.

As for the plug-ins and the hard coded entries, that happens because the entries you see for plugins, the screensaver and layout options aren't actually in the attract-mode program, they reside in the script files for those things.  There isn't a good way of handling the translation for these script files at the moment...
