Title: [download] led-style gaming platform marquees designed from scratch
Post by: verion on December 19, 2015, 03:55:32 PM
TLDR; update:

you can download the whole pack from a dedicated webpage:
www.ONYXarcade.com/marquee

----

I'm sure that not everyone is reading rather lengty thread about my NEVATO theme.
So I'm reposting this as a separate thread.

This is my concept for emulator marquee art for this theme.
Of course when it will be released - you can use it with any AM theme.

---

What do you think?

What emulators do we need?
I mean - not the list of ALL exisiting emulators, but reasonably short list.
Please keep in mind that I'm not using any emulators other than MAME.

What I'm planning right now it's based on omegamans' choice for robospin code
MAME, NES, SNES, SEGA, ATARI, N64

If you want me to add something else please post the emulator name along with AM recognisable name emu name
like this:
kat5200 = atari

----

And by emulator name I mean system/platform name like AMIGA, not emulator "the program" name (like WinUAE)

Honestly here is what i think

Nintendo
NES
SNES
N64
Gameboy (if you get bored)

Sega
Megadrive
master system (if you get bored)

Atari
2600
7800

Playstation
PSX

and of course mame (arcade) or daphne (but again that is "arcade")

I think those are what people use the most in their boxes...but that is just my opinion

You don't want to do all of them? You act as if you want to get outside and play or something ;)

If that could pay my bills (sigh) I would do this all day long  ;D

---

As for your list - isn't that supposed to be tied to an emulator?

like: Sega, Megadrive, Master System ale emulated in one soft (KEGA FUSION if I'm not mistaken) - so it should get just one marquee with SEGA logo, right?

I'd say if you can do the companies for consoles - Atari, Microsoft, NEC, Nintendo, Sega, SNK, Sony - "Arcade" for arcade emulators, maybe "Computer" for computer systems and "Pinball" for pinball. If you did have time to do individual systems you could do the most common ones.

I understand your question.but as per your example I don't use kega fusion. That and "Kega Fusion" means something to you because you set it up. The system name (megadrive) would be more understandable to someone else using someones cab.game set-up. Just my one and half cents...

I think liquid8d is right - if I do the companies first, we can have minimal usable set of marquees. And that can be further expanded with systems (if needed).

This is what I've got for now.

These look so sweet. Did you use any shader effects, perhaps something like a bloom effect? I would love to incorporate these as an option for robospin too.

It will fit robospin like a glove.
Those are ready-to-use images - that glow effect is already incorported in image.
I have a better control that way - and it is more resource friendly (without shader).

---

I was thinking about the best way to code it - to be user friendly and versatile.
My idea is to code it like this.

Code: [Select]
local emuMarquee = fe.add_image("[Emulator]" + "-marquee.jpg", flx*0.0645, fly*0.0477, flw*0.249, flh*0.0843 );
So the users can simply rename marquee to match emulator name (from AM config) that they are using.
And we can match default AM emulators to begin with.

If someone is using snes9x emulator it will be:   snes9x-marquee.jpg
If someone is using nestopia it will be:   nestopia-marquee.jpg

It can be easily done without touching code.

These look fantastic - Great job!

Technically the Super Nintendo logo is console specific and not a company logo.

Can't wait for you to release this theme...

Looking good!

I am building my cabinet with an stretched (bar) lcd monitor for marquee / score display.
Can you post high resolution (1080p+) versions?

I have to re-generate this in hi-res - but yes. Just have to find some time to do that. :)

I was thinking about using the same background for all of them - the one from ARCADE, because it looks more like proper marquee.
What do you think?

Thanks! I'm glad that you like it. Feel free to add it to the Robospin theme - if you want.

verion, if you could please make a TurboGrafx 16 header I would be so appreciative!  I am running Nevato right now and finally have all my movies and wheel images and it really seals the deal.

Thanks!

Hello verion!

I was searching the web for a back lightened Super Nintendo marquee.
Then I came across your SNES design here at attract-mode !!! :-)

Like the user "h0tw1r3" I would also appreciate a high resolution version of "mess-snes-marquee".

Many thanks for your great work,
tuberbuba

Hey Verion, did you ever came around to making these in a high res version?
The 'arcade' one would fit my cabinet perfectly ;) I already chose the cabinets colors based upon the cabinet in your awesome nevator theme.

Well... it is made in hi-res but I'm downscaling it to low-res to MASK the fact that the logo "shape" doesn't match led grid perfectly.
See the example below - it's a part of SNES logo.

Letters NI are reworked to match led grid perfectly - other letters are just "masked" by logo shape. When scaled down it looks really nice - but in hi-res not so well.

Ah ok, thanks for the reply
Title: Re: [download] led-style gaming platform marquees designed from scratch

So there are 2 main reasons against doing the "perfect" hi-res version:

1.
It's a hell of a work - you can see in this example, I have to "redesign" logo to fit the led grid, notice that NI letters are at slightly different angle then original letters.

2.
The original look (imperfect hi-re + downscaling) looks somehow better to me - more blurry, but also more interesting

Sure! I thought it was just a case of giving the originals, no problem at all!
