Yesterday, I got my sparking new raspberry PI3.
Milestones reached thus far:
Installed raspbian jessie, no noobs... Success
Installed and compiled SFML, attract, and FFMPEG... Success
Installed RetroPie... Success
Installed xbox and ps3 drivers... Success
Created and tested retroarch configs for nes, snes, n64... Success.
Configured menu bar to auto-hide... Success.
Autostart attract in the LXDE desktop... Success. Used this method ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE/autostart.
Deleted unwanted packages... Success.
Ongoing;
Currently testing mupen64 libretrocore gfx plugins (rice,glide64,gln64) with mixed results; Might be better to use the mupen64 standalone, still to be determined.
Alternative was to install raspian jessie Lite and the following; This would use less memory and save space.
1. Xorg Display Server
2. Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE)
3. Openbox Window Manager
4. LightDM Login Manager
Still need to configure MAME 0.73 libretrocore and a few more emulator cores.
So far, everything is looking good.

I wonder if it's going to be faster than overclocked PI2. I'm afraid the emulators are not multi-core optimised.
But having built-in bluetooth and wifi is great for distributed ready-to-use images, because bluetooth and wi-fi can work out-of-the-box with no room for error.

Oh, it's definitely faster. My first impression was the LXDE desktop was more responsive than compared to the RP 2. Attract runs a lot smoother as well. That said, you are correct in that a lot of older emulators only use single core. So, the faster CPU speed the better. Though, I'm not sure when compared to extreme RP 2 overclocking.

That's great!
Mine PI2 is stable @1.1Ghz which is almost as good as 1.2 PI3 (for a single core), but I'm sure that there is more under the hood than just a clock bump.
Here is a good read - PI3 overclocked by 20%

Once you get .78 setup would love to know how mortal kombats run.

Nitro-
Sure thing, I let you know today.

Hi everyone!
I just discover this front end => Attractmode and it seems quite marvelous!
I also receive a pi3 last week and already tried retropie on it (trought their image release) and would try with your front end.
Could you tell me how you managed to install everything? i'm not used to the linux environnement but i don't mind testing/trying/learning with some help :)
Thx a lot!
Cheers

If you can I'll be impressed. The pi is not much faster than a 400mhz and I could never get any MK to run on mine...

It depends on the mame version.
I had mortal kombat running just fine on an amd k7 thunderbird 550mhz back in when .78 first came out.
RPI3 is just slightly slower than that.
rpi2 couldn't hack it but rpi3 is twice as fast.

Sorry, I got a little sidetracked with RL. Anyway, I was able to burn some midnight oil last night and managed to test one of the MAME libretrocores. So, I decided to test imame4all for its speed, first.
And, since most of my romsets are updated to the latest 0.171, I downloaded the 0.37b dat file and updated with Clrmamepro for compatibility. Now, on to the testing.
All the classic arcade stuff ran really well. Surprisingly, MK1 and even MK2 ran pretty smooth. My biggest beef with this core is the compatibility. For example, out of all the street fighter roms, only street fighter II seemed to work. So, you can forget about playing roms like KOF.
Today, I will test advmane 1.4

Update...
The fb-next libretro core runs like a boss. I think this is going to be my go to emulator for neogeo and capcom games. Most of the games that I tested like Metal Slug, KOF, and SF run extremely well on the PI 3.
