Title: Micro SDCard and USB Thumbs Drive Setup RPI 3

Has anyone done this setup and it works ok? been thinking about it as I could save around 15 to 20gigs of my micro sd problem is 128gb micro they still expensive compared to usb thumb for vids and snaps

You mean having System on the mSD and Storage on the USB?

Can't speak for other "distros" other then OpenELEC/LibreELEC but I've been using a USB 3.0 pendrive on my 2 RPis for quite some time now and everything works great and it's also pretty snappy, in fact, almost as fast as the best mSD cards OC'ed.

Format the USB (thumb)drive in ext4 mode.
check with: sudo fdisk -l   what the drive name is for the usb-drive (this could be dev/sda5 )
Make a mount point in the /mnt folder (eg. sudo mount dev/sda5 disk )
change the permissions on the "disk" folder.

you can edit fstab (sudo nano /etc/fstab ) and add a line to mount the usb-drive (example add this line:  /dev/sda5       /mnt/disk      ext4      defaults   0       1   )

you can make folders for emulator , roms, wheels, etc on the usb drive then and copy the needed files
In attract mode you can point to the files stored on the usb-drive

for use with emulationstation, you need to edit the "etc/es_systems.cfg" file to change the rom locations.
best use is with attract mode for this method.

NOTE:
I advice to edit the fstab file directly on the PI itself and not via remote (like with putty), because i encountered problems when i did it with putty.

well not decided yet

I have some spare old 2.5in hdd's 160gb only 5200 rpm and some spare 1tb 3.5inch hdd;s and also 64gb ssd

so not sure weather to have just 16gb micro sd for operating system, then have either a ssd or hdd for the rom and art work setup, I know the hdd will be more reliable in data lose I guess or think

or have it like micro sd for operating system, ssd for artwork and roms on hdd

what every ones thoughts and experiences on this

that's what happen when you are born on half cusp star signs  :P

Hi,

Well, i use a 32Gig Micro SD for the Operating system and application.
For roms, artwork, vids, etc... i use a 320Gig USB harddisk.
Works without a problem so far.

But, i still can't get out a MAME game with the escape key. Any advice on that mather?

AdvMame works perfectly, esc key from game works fine. The really nice thing about Advmame is the video and sounds options it has.
