Ok why do I get blank screen after the retropi logo on floobs 0.4 when i change the
sudo nano b/etc/fsta
I enter this line
/dev/sda1 /mnt/disk ext4 defaults 0 1
so it points to my external hdd?
also to make note teh rpi 3 has solid red light and flashing green light

Omamez-
Fstab should already be setup to automount. So, you don't really need to edit fstab if you plugged a drive into the usb port.
Edit this file here > /etc/emulationstation/es_systems.cfg and change the rom paths for the emulators you want to use the external hd. It should probably be something like this /media/usb0/roms/mame. Basically, /media/usb0/ will be the root dir.

Are you sure that the external HDD is SDA?
Second. are you sure that external HDD have ext4 format?
Third change the last 1 for a 0.

sudo fdisk -l what drive(s) you have - gives me the details
External Hdd is - EXT4 partitioned
ok will try that change 1 for 0

Yeah, here is a generic ntfs example for fstab. Just add your partition type after /mnt like you did.
/dev/sda1 /mnt ntfs defaults 0 0
Then you need to edit the /etc/emulationstation/es_systems.cfg as I stated above.
