So I'm most of the way through my first cabinet build and everything has been going swimmingly up until just a few days ago.
I have no idea what changed or what windows update might have installed, but now most of the time when exiting a game in MAME, Attract Mode won't regain focus and I either have to click on it with the mouse or ALT-TAB over to it.
I'm running Windows 10 and here are the things I've tried:
Disable windows notifications
Disable everything in the task manager startup
Try both full screen and fill screen modes of Attract Mode
Try both full screen and fill screen modes of MAME
I'm going completely nuts here and would rather not do a fresh install of Windows 7, as I also plan on playing PC games on this machine and support for 7 is certainly waning.
Can anyone suggest anything else I can try?
Thanks!

Try running AM in compatibility mode = windows 7.
-
There's a new hide console option in attract.cfg, trying setting it to true.

Preliminary tests are showing that this fixed it. Thanks so much for the suggestion - no idea why I didn't try that. If the problem comes back, I'll try the hide console option next, but fingers are crossed that the issue is fixed.
Thanks!

Well, the problem is back and I've done nothing different. No idea what's going on, but it's driving me absolutely crazy. Does anyone else have any suggestions as to how to solve this? This is the last thing I need to fix before my cabinet is complete :(
-
Have you tried setting compatibility to XP and hide/show the console?
-
I don't see a hide/show console option. Can you point me in the right direction for that?
-
Its in the am.cfg in the am folder.
-
Thanks, found the setting, but it doesn't help either way.
I can't be the only person running Windows 10 with attract mode, can I? Am I the only person with this problem? I've shut down literally every non-essential task in the task manager and it doesn't seem to make any difference :(

I am not having this issue.

I am not having this issue.
What version of MAME, brand of graphics card, and what screen resolution are you using?
Thanks! Going nuts here.

Thanks. Maybe it's some weird problem with the fact that I'm using HLSL on mame .174 - using the Direct3D aspect of it might be screwing things up. I'm at a complete loss, especially since this morning everything is working fine again and I did absolutely nothing to change it.

Hello,
Same problem here.
Attract loses focus upon exiting mame in Windoze 10.
Have to click mouse to get it back.
Tried advice above, no dice.
Any suggestions welcome and appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi peeps
having the same problem
I was running attract-1.6.2-win64 and it runs fine on windows 10
I upgraded to v2.1.0 because it now supports video snaps, I have downloaded just about all the videos i need
but when i exit a game in mame everything freezes
quickest way out for me is to press the windows key and everything is back to normal

everyone-
If you've already set the hide console to yes in your attract.cfg try using a different exit command for AM than what the emulator is using. For example, if your emulator is using esc try mapping a different button in AM for exiting to the desktop. This has been working for me with hide console set to true.

'True' or 'Yes'?
All the other responses appear to be yes/no.
Anyway, Still getting a frozen image/black screen upon exiting a game.
My OS is win7 32

Ok update to my post
I have 2 laptops both running the same version of Windows 10
So I installed AM on my acer and it works just fine, same version of mame same roms and same videos, my Toshiba in the one with the problem
I am in the process of turning off any software running in the background but not having much luck
at the minute

Just to be clear... I'm old school, so yes means true. :)
hide_console yes

Here are a few things to try using v2.1.0 on win10:
Make sure window mode is set to fill screen the default
In attract.cfg, find hide_console and change to yes
Make sure there are no windows apps running in the background. Go to settings/privacy/background apps and turn everything off. I was having some focus issues with Win10x64 and AM2.1, but all problems seemed to go away with the new setting in attract.cfg file (hide_console change to yes)
. Thanks devs, love this front end.
