General / Joystick mappings names

Can anytime tell me where attract mode gets the joystick names from?
I'm trying to set my 8bitdo arcade stick to always be joy0, but in Config->Controls->Joystick Mappings the only option is "Microsoft X-box 360 Joystick"
Where did it get this name? Can I fix this in a configuration file somewhere?
I only have one controller connected and in my /dev/input the names all say 8bitdo.
I'm using the latest attract git source compiled on Arch Linux.
