Emulators / Another way to configure Mame's inputs controls?

Please excuse my noobness.
I recently got an image of Attract Mode but for some reason, in the in-game TAB menu, the UI menu controls and game input controls are set to a controller/joystick that isn't mine. Furthermore, standard keyboard bindings are not set. So, I cannot scroll through the menus to reconfigure them. All I can do is press TAB, ENTEE and a number of other keys, but not cursor arrows

Is there a way to edit these elsewhere in my system?
I'm running latest Attract Mode on latest RetroPie on a Pi3.
