General / Novices Need Fix For Attract-Mode Update Black Screen Crash!

As many posts in here can attest, when updating Attract-Mode through the Set-Up menu, the text scrolls by and a downloading counter starts. Once finished, the PI reboots to an absolutely blank screen. Two sound effects suggest that attract mode is trying to boot up and fails. There is NO response from a Keyboard from what I've read. No way to pull up the command prompt. This method of update essentially bricks the device. Most of us are smartphone users whom when we hit an UPDATE button don't have to be proficient in Linux so a great deal of us are currently lost in RetroPie jargon. Any help would be much appreciated. They wont answer any questions over on the RetroPie forum without chiding you for not reading their documentation or search the endless forum posts.
