SOLVED!

Pretty simple config issue as it turns out.

In the mame emulator config file in Attract Mode I just needed to change my workdir from c:\AttractMode\ to C:\Mame\:

workdir              C:\Mame\

The work directory was wrong, so it couldn't find the right mame.ini and therefore couldn't save hiscores.

Seems to be working now.

Curious if anyone ever figured out how to solve this issue?

Was messing around again and saw this behavior:

If I run from cmdprompt starting from c:\mame directory it works when I type:
C:\MAME>mame64 galaga

If i run from cmdprompt starting from c:\ it doesn't work (get same thing as launching from AM - defaults to 20,000 hi score)
C:\>c:\mame\mame64 -rompath c:\mame\roms galaga

if I don't specify rompath when running from c:\ then I just get errors
C:\>c:\mame\mame64 galaga
gg1_1b.3p NOT FOUND (tried in galaga galaga)
gg1_2b.3m NOT FOUND (tried in galaga galaga) <<lists about 12 missing items>>

Any ideas?

Yes.

The .hi files are saved in c:\MAME\HI

Wish I could help.  I'm having the exact same problem.

I run MAME directly and hi scores save just fine.  I run them through attract mode and they go back to the default hi score.  I can then go run it again directly (skipping AM) and the old high score shows up just fine.

Hopefully someone will have a pointer for us.
