attract mode in RetroPie on a Xubuntu Machine
« on: December 07, 2016, 03:22:56 AM »
Hi!
I'm making my arcade station with only MAME, I've tried retropie but i prefer attract mode.
The problem is that in retropie i can run all my roms using mame2003. On attract mode i use the mame application installed on Xubuntu that is 0.160 version and it's not able to run all the roms.
So I thought to use attract mode on retropie 'cause it seems that is possible to use but all the guide i found was about an IMG file for rasperry.
So my questions are:
1- Is there a guide for use attract mode on retropie having both already installed? which files should i have to modify?
2- alternativekly, is there a way to installa 078 versin of mame on xubuntu instead of the 160?
3- If i use clrmamepro to convert my roms from 078 to 160 will they work on mame160 attract mode or they continue to display that they miss some files?
Thank you so much!

ANother solution could be make attract mode use the executable used by retropie for mame2003 . Is it possible= which is the path?

Why do you need retropie? Just download attractmode and use it with your current mame installation.

That's what I'd like to do, but my mame installation is 0.160 and it is not compatible with a lot of roms that i already have for 0.78 version (which runs correctly in retropie) and i don't know how to (and if it's possible) to install a 0.78 version of mame in xubuntu.

No that's not possible. The earliest I know of is 1.06 using advance mame for linux. You'll have to update your roms to be able to use it.

To update my Roms IS it enough to rebuild them with clrmamepro and the correct dat file?

No that will not work. Newer sets may have newer (or extra) rom files added to them or deleted from them. You would have to find a newer set and then build from there.

I am under the assumption that you can build a .037 set or a 1.06 pr a 0.133 set ect. from 0.157 set if you have the right dat file but it NEVER has worked for me. Clrmame pro does rename resize all that but it doesn't make the right rom names for me. I have had to rename some manually and such. I would think that if the set is too new that it wouldn't work as well..maybe "stepping down" would work? (0.157 to 10.147 to 0.137 etc etc..)

it seems to me easier to use a windows machine with an old mame full working set of roms at this point ...
