Themes / Hursty Blue Theme
« on: October 07, 2019, 07:42:20 AM »
Over the past few years, I've worked a lot with Dwayne Hurst (the Emulation Station theme maker), and have ported a few of his themes to Attract Mode.

This is his Hursty Blue theme.

There are two themes:

hurstyblue_menu - used for the main Displays Menu / Nested Menu displays
hurstyblue_systems - used for the individual system displays

They are for 16:9 formatted screens.

The download links are located here:

Here is a short video demo of it in action.

Some additional examples:

Hey group,

I've recently created an Attract Mode theme to use on my Waveshare GameHAT portable console and wanted to share it.

You can download it via Github.

It's a minimal theme ... but easily readable still.

You can use it for any display (Displays menu, nested displays, systems, etc).

Below are screen snapshots (taken on a normal Retropie/TV setup - not the GameHAT since it's very hard to take live screenshots on) that will demo what it looks like.

To make use of the genre icons - your romlist files need to have the Category value filled in.

The screenshots show:

1) main menu for Arcades category
2) nested menu for Atari Classics
3) Atari Classics system menu

I re-coded my normal 720p system snaps into a 640x480 resolution to use on the GameHAT.

The game snaps are the SQ quality versions from EmuMovies.

If anyone wants my converted system snaps (there's about 270 of them - all systems plus a ton of collections)...I'll post the link as well.

Hope some find it useful!

I've never tested using that resolution .. but you might try my Unified theme I converted over to Attract Mode usage.

There's two downloads ... one for the AM main menu ... and one for the AM systems.  I use a nested setup...but if you don't, you might just need the AM systems theme.

The download links are in the first post (links to Github).

Emulators / Re: How is screen rotation configured for Mame Roms?

MAME itself (when launching the game) should display the game in the correct orientation.  You can press TAB to access the MAME GUI to alter that (or go into Retroarch if you're using a Retroarch based MAME core).

Attract Mode is just a front-end for selecting and launching the games, it doesn't do anything after the game is launched.

If, however, you're having game preview video snaps showing sideways while in the Attract Mode displays - then that means your MP4 file needs to be replaced with another one for that game.  Attract Mode just plays the MP4 file for you.  You can either edit your existing MP4 and resave it or get a new one.  EmuMovies is a good source for game video snaps.

To adjust the size of the boxart and cartart images ... in the layout.nut file at the bottom, find these two sections.

Adjust their W and H values as needed (by changing the flw and flh multiplier values).  You may also have to alter their X and Y values to position them properly.  Those are located in that same section for each.

boxart lines starting at:

if ( my_config["enable_gboxart"] == "Yes" )
::OBJECTS <- {
 boxart = fe.add_artwork("boxart", flx*0.5, fly*-2, flw*0.25, flh*0.45 ),

cartart lines starting at:

if ( my_config["enable_gcartart"] == "Yes" )
::OBJECTS <- {
 cartart = fe.add_artwork("cartart", flx*2, fly*0.675, flw*0.2, flh*0.2 ),

For the system videos .. since the theme uses full screen MP4 snaps ... you might try using 720p versions instead do 1080p versions, etc.  See if they run better on your setup.

@taelonian, sorry for the late reply on this....haven't checked on things here in a while.

I've updated the two Unified themes (unified_menu and unified_systems) to now have preserve_aspect_ratio for the wheels.  That should solve your issue.

There's been a few more systems added as well to the unified_systems.

Everything's updated on the Gitub links in the first post.

Bumped the release to version 3.0 now.

Fixed a few small things as well as added a couple of extra options.

The unified_systems can now have a straight vertical wheel or a curved vertical wheel.

I've got a few more ideas to implement ... just gotta find time to do it.

This is a very old theme ..... however, in the layout.nut file ... find this section and delete everything that comes after it.

// Themed Overlay Display Menu
// Add this block of code to the very end of any layout.nut file to have
// a centered theme-able menu

Remove all of the lines that are below that section.  This theme was written well before the displays menu could be assigned a layout/theme. By removing those lines in the layout.nut file, that should let Attract Mode work normally.

One thing on RetroPie you might run into (unless they've changed their install script over time) since you've installed Attract Mode via the RetroPie Setup script is, be careful doing RetroPie updates.

In the past when I tested that way, it all seemed to work great.  I made a bunch of changes to Attract Mode's setup (made a bunch of emulators, displays, theme changes, etc).  It all worked fine.

Then...I did a RetroPie "update all installed packages"...and that's when I found a problem.

When I did the "update all installed packages", RetroPie overwrote my attract.cfg file with the generic default one.  By doing that, it blew away all of my customization changes I'd made prior.

Since then, I only install Attract Mode via the command line now (like you did FFMPEG).

I'm not sure if this still happens, but I wanted to mention it in case it does.

Themes / Unified Theme - theme conversion of Big Box Unified
« on: May 17, 2018, 07:34:38 AM »
Hey group,

I converted the Big Box theme called “Unified” (which is itself a port of the prior Hyperspin themes) into an Attract Mode layout. I also added in many more Collections PNGs to the layout.

There are two.

unified_menu       use for the displays menu (and sub-menus if using a nested menu mode)
unified_systems       use for all system/collections displays

EDIT: New theme with overview game descriptions

unified_systems_overview     use for all system/collections displays

It uses the system snaps (/menu-art/snap) full screen so make sure you are using high enough quality MP4 files so they don’t look all pixelated.

I use the 16x9 HD unified snaps from EmuMovies for my systems.

The layouts are pretty simple, not much to them since they use MP4’s full screen, but it does look nice on my Windows PC machine’s Attract Mode setup.

I added the game's boxart/cartart images like the Big Box theme has (check your AM emulator config files to add the boxart and cartart file paths if needed).  They can be static or have animation via the layout options.

It does follow the Hyperspin/EmuMovies naming convention for system display names ... so you may have to adjust either your display's name or the filenames of the various PNG's to match.

I'm sure the layout.nut files could be enhanced, but it seemed to work pretty well for me.  So if you tweak it, please upload your changes!

Download from Github (click on the Green button and select download as ZIP).

main menu theme/layout

systems menu theme/layout

systems menu theme/layout with overview game descriptions

Overview files to show game descriptions...

These files should be placed in a sub-folder within Attract Mode with the following folder structure.

Attract Mode/scraper/(system)/overview

A special scraper/system folder (@) includes overview files to show a synopsis of various systems.

Here's a Github repo with a large amount of Overview files for various systems.

Click on the green Clone/Download button
Download the ZIP file
Copy the scraper folder's contents to the Attract Mode scraper folder.

Right now ... the game text descriptions are static.  I've tried a couple of different methods to have them scroll, but I just can't quite seem to get it working good enough.  It'll work great with a larger description, but then stutter on the next game that only has a few words in it.

I haven't been able to solve the issue yet.  Luckily though, there's only been a few games that have descriptions larger than my text box size area.

Hey everyone,

As a compliment to my Emulation Station Star Trek LCARS theme, I'm in the process of porting it over to AM.

One of the new additions to the AM theme is that the theme is going to make use of the [Overview] token to provide game descriptions.

I've already pre-made several thousand files and I'm in the process of finishing that up (just have the computer systems left to create).

Once I release the theme, I'll include all of the game description files along with instructions on where to copy them to.  Plus, I'm also going to provide a download link to the game description files themselves.  I'll also provide some sample code to put into a layout.nut file to use them.  So if you want to incorporate game descriptions into your themes, this may save you some time by not having to create them.

I've still got a little bit of work to do (game files, remaining system wheels, etc) ... but I'm hoping to release it in a couple of weeks.

Below you can see what the AM theme will look like.  You can also find the ES LCARS theme on my Youtube channel along with its download link.

The Motion Blue themes (both the AM and ES themes) were only tested on 16:9 monitors.  Not sure how they would work for other sizes.  Technically they will work, but I'm not sure how visually they will appear.  They will be squished in a little from the sides on a 4:3 ... so I'm guessing that same affect will be applied when using a 5:4 monitor.
